MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Fix webcam not working in Streamlabs

A practical walkthrough for resolving webcam capture problems in Streamlabs, from device selection and permissions to app conflicts and driver checks.

The essential answer

In most cases, a webcam that is not working in Streamlabs is caused by the camera being used by another application, the wrong device being selected in Streamlabs, or Windows, macOS or browser privacy permissions blocking access. Start by closing anything else that may be using the camera, then check the active video source and permission settings before reinstalling or changing drivers.

Start with the fastest checks

  • Close other camera apps: video chat, browser tabs, Windows Camera, OBS or other capture software can hold exclusive access to the webcam. Close them and retest.
  • Check the physical privacy shutter or lens cover: if the camera has a sliding cover, open it. Some laptops also have a privacy switch or a keyboard shortcut that disables the camera.
  • Confirm the connection: for USB webcams, unplug the camera and plug it into a different USB port, preferably directly on the computer rather than through a hub. For built-in cameras, skip this step.
  • Restart Streamlabs: after closing other software, fully quit Streamlabs and reopen it.

Check the video capture source

If the camera was already added as a source but shows a black, frozen or placeholder frame, select the source in Streamlabs and open its properties. Confirm that the device dropdown lists the intended webcam rather than a virtual camera or a similarly named device. If the correct camera is selected, try removing the source and adding a new Video Capture Device source. Newly added sources can force Streamlabs to re-request access and refresh the device list.

If the device list is empty or the camera name is grayed out, this usually points to an access or driver problem rather than a Streamlabs scene issue.

Check operating system permissions

On Windows, open Settings, then Privacy & security, then Camera. Camera access for the device must be enabled, and desktop apps must be allowed to access the camera. On macOS, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Camera, and make sure Streamlabs is enabled in the list. If the setting is already on, turn it off and on again for Streamlabs, then restart the app.

A permission check is useful because it tells you whether the operating system is blocking access before Streamlabs can even attempt capture. However, it does not test the camera hardware itself.

Test the camera outside Streamlabs

Open the built-in Camera app on Windows or Photo Booth on macOS. If the camera works there, the hardware and the operating system can communicate, so the issue is likely specific to Streamlabs or another app holding the device. If the camera does not work in the built-in app, the problem is at the system, driver or hardware level, and the next step is driver or device troubleshooting rather than changing Streamlabs settings.

Fix driver and device conflicts

For a USB camera that fails in the built-in camera app as well, open Device Manager on Windows, expand Cameras or Imaging devices, right-click the webcam and choose Uninstall device. Then unplug the camera, restart the computer, plug the camera back in and let Windows reinstall the driver. This is reversible, but it may reset device-specific settings to defaults.

On macOS, choose Apple menu, About This Mac, then System Report and check under Hardware and Camera. If the camera does not appear there, macOS is not detecting it. For external cameras, try a different cable if the connection is removable, since a cable may charge or power a device without carrying data correctly. If a built-in camera is missing, an authorized repair or manufacturer support path is the next escalation.

Retest against the original symptom

After each change, return to the Streamlabs scene and check whether the preview shows live motion. If the camera works in the system app but still fails in Streamlabs, perform a clean shutdown of other capture tools, verify the selected Streamlabs device again, and run Streamlabs as a normal user rather than in a special compatibility mode. If the camera fails everywhere and driver reinstall does not help, the remaining likely causes are a hardware fault or a firmware-level issue that may require the device manufacturer's support.
