Fix webcam not working on Chromebook
Narrow down Chromebook webcam problems with checks for privacy controls, Camera app capture, site permissions and the selected video input.
To fix a webcam that is not working on a Chromebook, check any camera privacy control, then test video in the Camera app. If the Camera app shows a live picture but your meeting or website does not, focus on that service’s camera permission and selected video input. If neither works, continue with the broader checks below. The symptom alone does not establish the cause.
Check whether the camera is physically blocked
If your Chromebook has a camera shutter or camera privacy switch, make sure it is open or enabled. A lens cover can hide the picture without preventing the camera from being detected. The presence and behavior of privacy controls depend on the Chromebook model.
For a USB webcam, check its connection. Reconnect it and, if available, try a direct USB port instead of a hub. A change in behavior after reconnecting helps narrow the problem to the connection or device path; it does not by itself identify a faulty component.
Test video in the Camera app
Close other apps and browser tabs that might be using the camera, then open the Chromebook’s Camera app. If it offers a camera-switching control, select the camera you want to test. Check for a live preview and try taking a photo.
- A live preview and successful photo show that the selected camera can capture an image in the Camera app at that moment. Move on to the website or app that originally failed.
- A working preview from a different camera does not verify the camera you intended to use. Check which input is selected.
- A black picture, error or unavailable camera in the Camera app means the problem is not confined to the original website. Recheck privacy controls, then restart the Chromebook.
This is a video capture check. It does not test microphone audio, prove that a website has permission, or rule out an intermittent camera problem.
If the Camera app works, check the failing website or app
For a website in Chrome, open the site controls beside the address bar and inspect its camera permission. Allow camera access if you intend to use video there, then reload the page and try again. If Chrome reports that camera access is disabled at the Chromebook level, check the camera privacy controls in ChromeOS Settings. Labels and available controls can vary by ChromeOS version.
Next, open the meeting service’s or app’s video settings and select the intended camera. Device detection, permission and selection are separate: a camera can appear in a list while access is blocked, and permission can be granted while another camera is selected. Make sure video is enabled within the call as well.
Retest in the original service. If its preview works but other participants cannot see you, camera capture is working in that preview; check the service’s in-call video controls and troubleshooting guidance. If only one website or app continues to fail, use that service’s support guidance before changing Chromebook-wide settings.
If the Camera app also fails, restart and retest
Save your work, restart the Chromebook, and test the Camera app before reopening other camera-using apps. Then retry the original task. Stop troubleshooting once the intended camera works in the place where it previously failed.
When to get further help
If camera settings are locked on a school or work Chromebook, contact its administrator. If the camera still fails in the Camera app after the checks above, contact the Chromebook manufacturer or the external webcam’s support team. Report the model, ChromeOS version, exact error, whether the camera is built in or external, and which tests failed.
No model details, diagnostic results or official recovery guidance were supplied, so a hardware fault cannot be confirmed and a model-specific recovery procedure cannot be verified here. Before attempting a reset, driver change or firmware procedure, obtain official instructions for the exact device and confirm any effects on local data and settings.
