MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Fix webcam not working in Zoom

Troubleshoot Zoom webcam problems by checking video controls, camera selection, permissions and a separate camera preview, then retest your meeting video.

If your webcam is not working in Zoom, check that meeting video is started, select the intended camera and confirm that Zoom has permission to use it. Then test the camera outside Zoom to narrow down the problem. A missing camera, a permission error and a black preview need different follow-up checks.

Check Zoom’s video control and selected camera

In your meeting, use Start Video if your video is stopped. Open the camera selection menu beside the video control, or open Zoom’s video settings, and select the webcam you intend to use. Control names and locations can vary by Zoom version and device. These checks concern webcam video; microphone selection and mute controls affect audio separately.

  • If the intended camera appears, select it and check the preview. A listed device is evidence of detection, but does not establish that it can deliver video.
  • If the preview shows a different camera or a virtual feed, change the selection to your physical webcam.
  • If the preview works but meeting video is stopped, start video in the meeting and check again.
  • If the camera is absent or its preview remains black, continue with the physical and permission checks below.

Check the camera’s physical controls and connection

Open any lens privacy shutter and check for a camera-disable switch or keyboard control, if your device has one. A closed shutter can block the picture even when the camera is detected. For an external webcam, check its connection; if needed, disconnect and reconnect it, then recheck Zoom’s camera list and preview. If it connects through a hub, trying a direct computer connection can help narrow down whether that connection path contributes to the failure.

Check camera access permissions

On Windows, open Settings and find the camera privacy controls. Confirm that camera access is enabled and that the applicable app or desktop-app access setting allows Zoom to use it. On macOS, check Camera under System Settings → Privacy & Security and allow Zoom if it is listed. The exact controls depend on your operating system version. After changing access, quit and reopen Zoom, then test its video preview again.

If you use Zoom in a browser, check both the browser’s camera permission for the meeting page and the operating system’s camera permission for that browser. Select the intended camera in the available meeting or browser controls. Permission allows access; it does not establish that the correct input is selected.

If a camera permission control is locked or managed by your organization, contact its administrator. Repeatedly changing Zoom’s camera selection will not resolve an access restriction.

Compare Zoom with a separate camera preview

Close other apps and browser tabs that may be using the webcam, then retry Zoom. If it still fails, quit Zoom and test the same physical camera in another camera application available on your device. Close that application before reopening Zoom.

  • If the same camera produces a live picture elsewhere, it can capture video in that application at that moment. Focus next on Zoom’s selected camera, its permissions and its current application session. This result does not prove that Zoom has access.
  • If the camera fails in both places, check the connection, physical controls and operating system permissions again. A shared failure does not by itself prove that the webcam is broken.
  • If Zoom works after another camera application is closed, competing camera use may have contributed. Keep that application closed while retesting your meeting.

Retest and know when to escalate

After each change, test the original symptom in Zoom: select the intended webcam, confirm a live preview and start meeting video. Stop troubleshooting once the original problem is resolved. If a fresh Zoom session still fails, restarting the device is another reversible step; save your work first because a restart closes applications and interrupts an active meeting.

If the problem persists only in Zoom, contact Zoom support or your organization’s support team. If the same camera also fails outside Zoom, contact device support or your administrator. Include your operating system and Zoom versions, webcam model, exact error message, whether the camera appears in Zoom’s selection menu and the result of the separate camera test.

The operating system, webcam model, Zoom version and error message were not supplied, so the exact cause cannot be identified here. Driver, firmware and reset procedures require official guidance for the specific device and platform before they can be recommended.
