Fix webcam not working in PowerPoint
Narrow down a PowerPoint webcam problem by checking camera access, input selection and video capture, then retest your presentation or recording.
If your webcam is not working in PowerPoint, first check whether the camera works outside PowerPoint. Then check camera permissions and the camera selected in the PowerPoint feature you are using. A missing camera control, a black preview and missing video in a recording need different checks.
The supplied information does not identify your operating system, PowerPoint version or whether you use the desktop or browser app. It also contains no verified product guidance. Exact menu paths and feature availability therefore remain unconfirmed; use the checks below where the corresponding controls are available.
Identify where the camera fails
- No camera control: Establish whether your PowerPoint version and the feature you opened support the camera task you want. Permissions alone cannot establish feature availability.
- No camera listed: Check the connection and whether another camera app detects the device.
- Camera listed but preview black: Check the privacy shutter, camera disable control, access permissions and selected input.
- Preview works but recorded video is missing: Focus on the recording controls and playback of the saved result.
Test the webcam outside PowerPoint
Open any physical privacy shutter and check for a camera disable switch or keyboard control on your device. For an external webcam, check its connection; if it is connected through a hub, try a direct connection to the computer. Change one thing at a time so you can identify what helps.
Close PowerPoint and open a camera app available on your computer. If it shows live video, that supports the camera working in that app at that moment. It does not prove that PowerPoint has permission, uses the same input or can record video successfully. Close the test app before returning to PowerPoint.
If the camera also fails in the test app, investigate the device connection, physical controls and system camera access before changing presentation settings. Failure in two apps does not by itself prove that the webcam is broken.
Check permission and the selected camera
For desktop PowerPoint on Windows or macOS, inspect the operating system’s camera privacy settings for any applicable access controls. If access is disabled, enable the relevant control and reopen PowerPoint. Device detection and permission are separate: seeing a camera name does not establish that the app can capture video.
If you use PowerPoint in a browser and your camera feature is available there, check both the browser’s camera permission for the page and the operating system’s permission for the browser. After changing access, reload the page and test again.
In the PowerPoint camera or recording feature you are using, inspect the input selector if one is present. Choose the intended webcam, especially if several cameras or virtual camera inputs are listed. If the feature has a camera on/off control, confirm that video is enabled. Microphone selection and permission are separate; working audio does not confirm working webcam video.
If access and input selection appear correct but the preview still fails, close other apps and browser tabs that may be using the webcam, then reopen PowerPoint. This checks for a possible camera-use conflict; it does not establish that another app caused the problem.
Retest the original task
Return to the same presentation and camera feature after each change. For a preview problem, confirm that live video appears. For a recording problem, make a short test recording and play back the saved result to check for webcam video. A working preview alone does not verify the recording.
If the camera works elsewhere but still fails in PowerPoint, collect your operating system, PowerPoint version, desktop or browser usage, webcam model, exact error and the stage that fails. Use those details when seeking product support. If the camera fails across apps, seek device or operating-system support. Driver, firmware and reset instructions are omitted because no verified guidance for your setup was supplied.
