MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Fix webcam not showing in OBS or Streamlabs

Troubleshoot a missing webcam in OBS or Streamlabs, check its microphone separately, and use reversible tests to narrow down the cause.

If your webcam is not showing in OBS or Streamlabs, first check that the active scene contains a visible video capture source with the correct camera selected. If the picture appears but your voice is missing, check the microphone input separately: a working camera picture does not establish that webcam audio is being captured. No device details or test results were supplied, so the cause remains unconfirmed.

Check the scene and camera source

Open the scene you intend to record or stream. Look for its video capture source, check that it is visible, and open its properties to confirm the selected device. If there is no camera source, add a Video Capture Device source and choose your webcam. Labels can differ between application versions.

If the source preview shows a picture but the scene does not, check whether another source covers it or whether its position, size or crop places the image outside the canvas. A picture in the source preview points toward a scene arrangement problem; it does not indicate a microphone fault.

If the camera is missing or its preview is blank

  • 1. Close other applications that might use the webcam, including the other broadcasting application if both OBS and Streamlabs are open. Reopen the affected application and test again. If this restores the picture, competing camera access is a plausible cause.
  • 2. Check your operating system’s camera privacy settings and allow camera access for the application where applicable. If changing access restores the picture, permissions were involved.
  • 3. Reconnect an external webcam and, where possible, test a direct connection to another compatible USB port. If the result changes, investigate the connection path before replacing the camera.
  • 4. With OBS and Streamlabs closed, test the webcam in another camera application. Then close that application before testing the broadcaster again.

If the webcam works elsewhere, concentrate on the affected broadcaster’s device selection and source configuration. Testing a new, temporary scene with only the camera source can help distinguish an existing scene problem from a broader application problem. If the camera also fails elsewhere, check whether the operating system recognizes it before pursuing broadcaster settings.

If the webcam picture works but speech is missing

Confirm that your webcam model includes a microphone; that specification was not supplied. In OBS or Streamlabs, inspect the audio input settings or an Audio Input Capture source and select the intended microphone. The webcam microphone may appear under a different name from the camera, so use the operating system’s input-device list to help identify it.

Check microphone privacy permissions separately from camera permissions. Make sure the intended input is enabled, unmuted and has its input level above zero. Speak while watching the application’s audio meter. Meter movement indicates that a signal is reaching that input, but a short recording and playback are needed to check whether your speech is actually recorded and intelligible.

If the meter moves but the recording is silent, inspect the source’s recording-track assignment and the tracks enabled for recording. If the meter does not move, test the same microphone in the operating system’s input settings or another recording application. A working input elsewhere points toward the broadcaster’s configuration; failure in both places leaves permissions, device selection, connection and hardware as possibilities.

When to seek device support

Seek device-specific support if the camera or its confirmed built-in microphone remains unavailable across applications after checking permissions and connections. If practical, test it on another compatible computer. Failure there strengthens the case for a device fault, but does not prove one. Service or replacement is better justified after checking compatibility and the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance than after a failure in OBS or Streamlabs alone.
