How to Fix Webcam Flickering in Streamlabs
Practical steps to diagnose and reduce webcam flickering in Streamlabs, including camera source, resolution, frame rate, lighting, and permission checks.
Identify the symptom and environment
Start by noting when the flicker appears. Check whether it shows in the Streamlabs preview, in the recording or stream output, or only in a separate camera app. Record the camera model, connection type, operating system, and whether the camera is built in or external. This helps separate a capture or encoding issue from a problem with the camera itself.
Isolate where the fault occurs
Open the camera in another application that can use the selected camera. If it flickers there too, the cause is more likely the camera, its connection, lighting, or driver state. If the image is stable elsewhere but flickers in Streamlabs, focus on the capture source, resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings inside Streamlabs.
Check camera permission at the operating system level if the preview is blank or unstable. On systems that show camera access settings, confirm that Streamlabs is allowed to use the camera. If a second camera is available, switch to it as a quick comparison, but avoid leaving two applications open with the same capture source because that can create its own conflict.
Try reversible fixes in order
Close other programs that may be using the camera, especially browser-based video calls or another capture app. In Streamlabs, remove the existing video capture source and add it again, then select the correct device. Confirm that the source is not duplicated on the scene.
Open the properties of the video capture source. If resolution or frame rate controls are available, set them to a standard combination supported by the camera. Avoid very high frame rate or resolution settings when flicker is present. A mismatch between the selected camera resolution and the canvas or output resolution can produce unstable frames.
Open the Streamlabs video and output settings. Lowering the streaming bitrate or changing the encoding preset can reduce frame drops during CPU-heavy moments, but first check whether the source itself flickers in the preview. If the flicker appears only under low lighting, add stable light in front of the subject and avoid backlight that makes the camera adjust exposure repeatedly.
For an external camera, reconnect it directly to a different port on the computer. Avoid unpowered hubs when possible. Check the cable and port seating, but do not change drivers or install unknown downloads without confirming that the current camera driver is actually suspected.
Confirm the result
Return to the Streamlabs preview and watch the original scene under the same lighting and movement conditions. If the flicker is gone, record a short test clip to make sure the problem does not appear only in the recording format or only in the final encoded output. If the preview is stable but the recording flickers, review the recording format and encoder settings separately.
If the problem remains
Keep a note of the camera model, operating system, connection type, Streamlabs version, and the exact settings you tried. Write down whether the flicker appears in the preview, the recording, or only on the stream. If the same camera flickers in multiple apps, contact the camera or computer manufacturer support with those observations. Flicker alone does not prove that the camera hardware has failed, so avoid resetting the system or replacing hardware until the camera has been tested on another computer if possible.
