How to Fix Webcam Flickering in OBS Studio
Practical steps to diagnose and fix a flickering webcam in OBS Studio, from capture source and lighting to resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings.
Identify the symptom and environment
A flickering webcam in OBS Studio usually appears as rapid brightness shifts, color pulsing, horizontal bands, or the image cutting in and out. Note when the flicker happens: continuously, only in preview, only while recording, or only when lighting conditions change. Also record whether OBS is running on Windows, macOS, or Linux and whether the camera is built into a laptop or connected through USB. This helps separate camera-related problems from OBS settings.
Isolate where the fault occurs
First check the same camera in another application that can show a live preview, such as the operating system camera app. If the image flickers there too, the cause is more likely hardware, lighting, driver, or camera firmware. If it is stable outside OBS, compare the capture source settings inside OBS.
Open the source properties for the video capture device and confirm the selected camera is the intended model, not a virtual camera or another connected device. On Windows, OBS may offer different capture methods for the same camera. If one capture method is available as an alternative, test it to see whether the flicker follows the capture method or the camera itself.
USB banding and flicker can also appear when a camera shares a USB controller with other high-bandwidth devices. To test this without changing permanent setup, temporarily disconnect other unnecessary USB devices or move the camera to a different USB port. Use a direct port on the computer rather than an unpowered hub when possible.
Try reversible fixes in order
Start with the camera settings inside OBS. Select the video capture source, open Properties, and locate resolution, frame rate, and video format controls where available. Change only one setting at a time and observe the preview. Matching the resolution and frame rate to the camera's native output can reduce flicker caused by conversion. If the camera supports it, disabling automatic exposure, auto white balance, or auto gain may stop repeated brightness changes.
Check the room lighting before changing advanced encoder options. Flicker in the form of dark rolling bands is often caused by artificial light pulsing at the local mains frequency. In a 60 Hz power region, testing 30 or 60 frames per second can help; in a 50 Hz region, 25 or 50 frames per second may reduce the effect. The camera's own exposure or anti-flicker setting may also list 50 Hz or 60 Hz choices.
In OBS output settings, encoding and bitrate affect the recorded or streamed result rather than the preview. If flicker appears only in the recording or stream, check the recording format and encoder. A very low bitrate can cause visible compression pulsing, especially in scenes with fine detail or movement. Try a higher bitrate and compare the same short recording.
Some camera controls are not exposed in OBS. For removable webcams, check the manufacturer's camera utility or the operating system camera settings for exposure, frequency, power line frequency, or firmware options. Close other software that may be using the camera permission at the same time, because two applications competing for one camera can cause the preview to switch or flash.
Confirm the result
After each change, return to the OBS preview and make a short test recording of at least ten seconds. Move within the frame and keep the original lighting conditions. Play back the recording and check whether the flicker is gone, reduced, or unchanged. If the preview is stable but the recording is not, review the encoder and bitrate settings again.
If the problem remains
Keep notes on which combinations changed the behavior: capture method, resolution, frame rate, lighting, USB port, and whether the camera flickers in other apps. If the problem occurs in every app and on another computer or port, contact the camera manufacturer or a repair provider. If the camera is stable outside OBS but flickers in OBS, use the OBS log after reproducing the issue to identify the active capture source, resolution, and frame rate. These observations are useful when asking for support, but a single flickering symptom is not by itself proof that the camera hardware has failed.
