How to Fix Webcam Flickering and Green Flashes in Discord
Practical steps to stop webcam flickering, green flashes and color glitches in Discord video calls, from camera settings to lighting and permissions.
Identify the symptom and environment
Start by noting exactly what appears on screen. Flickering can look like rapid brightness changes, horizontal bands, strobing, or brief green frames over the whole video. A green flash is often a momentary color glitch rather than a hardware failure. Record when the issue occurs: during a Discord call only, when another app is using the camera, in low light, or at a specific resolution and frame rate. Also note the device type, operating system and whether you are using the desktop app or a browser. These details help you test the right setting instead of changing everything at once.
Isolate where the fault occurs
Open the same camera in another app, such as the built-in camera application or a separate video call tool. If the flicker appears there too, the cause is more likely the camera, its connection, lighting or the video format being requested. If the image is stable elsewhere but unstable in Discord, focus on Discord's selected camera, resolution, frame rate and background effects.
Check the physical setup next. Use a direct USB port on the computer instead of an unpowered hub, and try another cable if the camera connector is loose. Reduce exposure to bright or pulsing light sources, because fluorescent and LED lighting can create strobing that cameras record as flicker. Close other apps that may still hold camera permission, then reopen Discord so it can request the camera again.
Try reversible fixes in order
Begin in Discord by opening User Settings, then Voice and Video. Under Video Settings, confirm that the selected camera is the correct device. If the preview is flashing, select a different camera and then reselect the original, which can force Discord to restart the video stream.
Next, lower the output resolution and frame rate temporarily. Some cameras flicker when Discord requests a high frame rate or a resolution the camera cannot sustain with the available lighting or connection. Choose a lower frame rate first, watch the preview, then adjust resolution only if needed.
- Disable video filters, background blur and overlay effects.
- Turn off low-light or automatic white balance modes in the camera application if they are available.
- Add steady front lighting and reduce bright light coming from directly behind you.
- Close other applications that may be using the camera or competing for USB bandwidth.
If you use Discord in a browser, check browser permission and media settings. Close every tab that may be holding camera permission, reload the call page and allow camera access again. Also check whether the browser is forcing a resolution or frame rate through its media controls.
Confirm the result
Return to Discord's Video Settings and watch the preview in the same lighting where the problem appeared. Join a private test call with the same camera selected and let the feed run for several minutes. The fix is confirmed only when the flickering and green flashes stop under the same conditions that previously triggered them.
If the problem remains
Keep a short record of what you changed and the result after each step. Include whether another app shows the same issue, which resolution and frame rate were active, and whether the glitch appears in both the desktop app and browser. If the camera is stable in other apps but flickers in Discord, report those observations to Discord support with your app version and operating system details. If the same camera flickers in multiple apps even after replacing the cable, port and lighting, contact the camera manufacturer or a qualified repair service. Do not treat a single green flash as proof that the camera has failed.
