How to Fix Webcam Flickering in Google Meet

Practical steps to stop webcam flickering in Google Meet, from lighting and camera selection to browser permissions and video settings.

Identify the symptom and environment

Start by describing when the flicker appears. Note whether it happens only in Google Meet, only in a specific browser, or in every app that uses the camera. Also record whether the image flashes, pulses, changes brightness, or drops frames during movement.

Isolate where the fault occurs

Open the camera in a separate preview window or another video app. If the flicker appears there too, the problem is more likely related to lighting, the camera itself, or its driver. If the preview is stable, focus on browser settings, camera permission, and the device selected inside Meet.

Close other programs that may be using the webcam. Some applications hold the camera at one resolution or exposure setting, which can conflict with a video call. Restart the browser afterward and rejoin the meeting to test.

Try reversible fixes in order

Change the lighting before changing software settings. Flicker is often caused by artificial light that cycles faster than the camera's frame rate. Add steady daylight or a brighter continuous light source, and avoid pointing the camera toward a window or a screen that is changing brightness.

In Google Meet, open the video options and check that the correct selected camera is active. If an external camera is plugged in, remove and reconnect it only after you have chosen the correct device in the meeting settings.

Check camera permission for the browser. Allow camera access for the site, then reload the meeting page. If permission was blocked earlier, Meet may show a placeholder instead of a stable image.

Try a lower meeting send resolution if the browser or connection is struggling. In Meet settings, reduce the send resolution or turn off any HD option. A lower setting can reduce dropped frames, but it does not replace a frame rate or exposure fix.

If the camera control software includes a power-line frequency setting, switch between the available anti-flicker options, such as 50 Hz and 60 Hz, and watch the preview. This only applies when the camera utility exposes that setting.

Confirm the result

Rejoin the same type of meeting where the flicker was visible. Move normally, speak, and keep the camera active for several minutes. The fix is confirmed only when the image stays stable under the original conditions.

If the problem remains

Keep notes about which app, browser, camera, and lighting condition produce the flicker. If the camera is external, try it on another computer to see whether the same behavior follows the device. Contact device support or a repair service with those observations, and avoid treating flicker alone as proof that the camera has failed.
