How to Fix Webcam Flickering Through a Docking Station

Practical steps to diagnose and reduce webcam flickering when the camera is connected through a docking station, without changing unverified settings.

Identify the symptom and environment

Flickering may appear as rapid brightness changes, visible horizontal bands, or brief black frames. Record when it happens: during a video call, in the camera preview, in one application only, or whenever the webcam is active. Also note whether the camera is connected directly to the computer or through a docking station, and whether the dock is powered by its own adapter.

Operating system, camera model, and the selected app can affect which settings are available. If the title or issue mentions a specific device or platform, confirm those details first. Otherwise, keep the description general enough to match the available menus.

Isolate where the fault occurs

Disconnect the webcam from the docking station and connect it directly to a port on the computer. If flickering stops, the dock, its cable, its power supply, or the camera connection through the dock is more likely to be involved. If flickering continues, test the same camera in another application or the system camera preview.

Check which camera is selected in the app. A video call may be using a different input than the one shown in the system preview. Camera permission settings can also prevent an application from using the expected device, so the image behavior may not reflect the camera that needs to be tested.

Use a second USB cable or port only when it helps confirm whether a cable or connector is causing the unstable image. Avoid changing many parts at once, because that makes it harder to identify which change affected the result.

Try reversible fixes in order

Start with changes that are easy to undo. Connect the dock to a different port on the computer or reconnect its power adapter. If the dock has a separate uplink cable, reseat both ends and avoid placing the cable near other power cables.

In the camera or video call settings, lower the resolution or frame rate temporarily. Some USB connections become less stable when sending a high-bandwidth video stream through a dock. A lower setting can show whether the flicker is related to data throughput.

Improve lighting if the image appears to pulse with indoor lamps. Fluorescent or LED lighting can create a flicker-like effect in the video image even when the camera hardware is working normally. Move the camera or change the light source, then check the preview again.

Close other applications that may be using the camera at the same time. A second program holding the selected camera open can cause conflicts or repeated reinitialization in some systems.

Confirm the result

Return to the original app and conditions where the problem appeared. Keep the camera running for several minutes under the same lighting and connection type. If the image remains steady, the connection or setting that was changed is likely responsible.

Test one change at a time when you need to know which correction worked. If you changed resolution, frame rate, lighting, and port at the same time, the result confirms a fix but not the specific cause.

If the problem remains

Keep a short record of what you observed: direct connection versus dock, which app and selected camera were used, whether the dock was powered, and which settings were tested. This helps support staff or a repair service without assuming that the camera is faulty.

If the camera works directly on the computer but flickers only through the dock, contact the dock or computer manufacturer support with the connection and power details. If the flicker also appears on a direct connection and in multiple apps, the camera or its cable may need service.
