How to Fix Voicemeeter Microphone Crackling in Discord
Practical troubleshooting for microphone crackling in Discord when audio passes through Voicemeeter, covering levels, sample rates, buffering and device selection.
Identify the symptom and environment
Crackling usually appears as short, irregular pops or rough static on your voice while other Discord audio may sound normal. Record when it happens: only in voice channels, also in a local recording, only after running other effects, or only when CPU load is high. Note whether listeners hear it while you hear yourself clean, because that points to the send path rather than local monitoring.
Voicemeeter acts as a separate audio mixer between your physical input device and Discord. A fault can therefore be in the microphone, the Windows audio path, Voicemeeter's processing, the virtual output device that Discord captures, or Discord itself. Keeping those layers separate helps you avoid changing every setting at once.
Isolate where the fault occurs
First confirm whether the crackling exists before Voicemeeter. Open a simple recording application and record the microphone directly from its physical Windows input, without Voicemeeter selected. If the direct recording also crackles, the problem is likely the microphone, cable, interface driver or input gain rather than Discord.
Next test the Voicemeeter output side without Discord. Record Voicemeeter's virtual output in the same recording application while speaking. If that recording crackles, continue with Voicemeeter settings. If it is clean, the issue may be Discord's input selection, legacy audio settings or processing such as noise suppression.
Check the input level while speaking. A level constantly near the top of the meter can clip and produce a harsh crackle. Voice that is too quiet can also sound broken after processing, especially if Discord adds automatic gain or background noise reduction over an already weak signal.
Try reversible fixes in order
Start with levels. In Voicemeeter, reduce the physical input gain so normal speech peaks around the middle of the meter, then raise the output fader only if the virtual output is too quiet. Do not use a high input gain and a very low output fader as a substitute, because that can drive the input path harder than needed.
Check the audio format. Open the Windows sound settings for each Voicemeeter input and output device, select the Advanced tab where available, and compare the sample rate settings. Mixing devices set to different rates can produce periodic clicks or rough audio. Set the physical input, Voicemeeter virtual devices and playback device to the same supported rate, such as 48000 Hz, and test again.
Review buffering. If you run Voicemeeter on a busy computer, a very low buffer can cause dropouts and crackling when other tasks compete for CPU time. Increase the buffering setting by one step, or close demanding applications temporarily to see whether the sound becomes stable. Manufacturers change option names between versions, so look for a buffer, latency or engine setting rather than assuming a single menu label.
In Discord, open voice settings and confirm that the input device is the Voicemeeter virtual output you use, not the physical microphone. Disable experimental or advanced processing one item at a time, test after each change, and re-enable anything that makes no difference so you do not leave useful background noise reduction off without reason.
Confirm the result
After each change, have a second person listen in Discord or make a short test recording from the same path that previously failed. Speak at your normal volume and include a pause so dropout or crackle is easy to hear. The original symptom is fixed only when the same material sounds stable through the route that showed the fault.
Keep a note of only the settings you changed. If one step removes the crackle, do not continue changing further options. Revert unrelated adjustments so the working configuration stays as simple as possible.
If the problem remains
Record the current observations: whether the microphone crackles directly in Windows, whether Voicemeeter's output is clean without Discord, and which Discord settings produce a change. This narrows the next support step and prevents unnecessary replacement of healthy equipment.
If the direct microphone recording crackles on another device as well, cable or microphone service may be appropriate. If the crackle appears only under high system load, check cooling, background tasks and available CPU headroom before replacing hardware. Contact device or software support when the isolation test is consistent but official settings do not stabilize the audio.
