How to Fix Screen Recording Not Working on iPhone
Step-by-step iPhone screen recording troubleshooting: check Control Center, permissions, storage, restrictions, audio settings, and verify the fix.
Identify the symptom and environment
Start by noting exactly what happens when you try to record the screen on your iPhone. The screen recording button may be missing from Control Center, tapping it may do nothing, recording may stop immediately, or the clip may save without audio or as a black video. Check which iOS version is installed and whether the issue occurs in one app, on the Home Screen, or everywhere. Also note if you are using a third-party recording app or the built-in screen recorder, because the fix can differ.
Isolate where the fault occurs
First confirm that the Screen Recording control is actually added to Control Center. Open Settings, tap Control Center, and look under Included Controls. If Screen Recording is not included, the option will not appear when you open Control Center. If it appears under More Controls, tap the green plus button to add it.
Next, separate app-level restrictions from a device-wide problem. Try starting a recording while on the Home Screen. If that works but recording stops inside a specific app, the app may block screen capture through a content-protection feature. Some video, banking, and streaming apps intentionally prevent recording or turn part of the screen black.
Check whether the problem is related to available storage. Screen recordings can be large, especially at high resolution or with sound. If iPhone storage is full or nearly full, the recording may stop right away or the finished file may not save. Open Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage, and look at the available space.
Try reversible fixes in order
Begin with the least disruptive steps. Restart the iPhone if the recording control is present but does not respond. Press and hold the side button and a volume button until the power-off slider appears, turn the device off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on. Then test the recorder again.
If the control is missing, add it manually. Open Settings, tap Control Center, and add Screen Recording to Included Controls. After adding it, open Control Center and look for the circular record button. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the upper-right corner; on an older model with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge.
If the control is present but greyed out, check Screen Time restrictions. Open Settings, tap Screen Time, then Content & Privacy Restrictions. If restrictions are on, tap Content Restrictions and check whether Screen Recording is set to Allow. Depending on the iOS version, this option may also appear under Allowed Apps or as a Screen Recording toggle.
For recordings with no audio, decide whether you want microphone sound. Open Control Center, touch and hold the Screen Recording button, and check whether Microphone is on. The microphone setting can capture your voice or surrounding sound, while leaving it off records only device audio when an app provides it. Some apps and system sounds may not be recorded because of licensing or app behavior.
If recordings do not save, free up space by removing unused apps or large files. You can also reduce the recording size by lowering the screen brightness, recording a shorter section, or closing background apps before starting. Avoid deleting important data as a troubleshooting step.
Confirm the result
After each change, perform a short test recording of the Home Screen. Tap the Screen Recording button, wait for the three-second countdown if it appears, then swipe between pages for a few seconds. Stop the recording by tapping the red status bar or the record control, then open Photos and play the clip. Check that the video has picture, lasts for the expected duration, and includes the intended audio setting.
If the problem remains
Keep a note of the exact behavior: whether the button is missing, disabled, or unresponsive, which iOS version is installed, how much storage remains, and whether the problem happens in all apps or only one. This helps support narrow down the cause. If built-in recording still fails after restarting, adding the control, checking restrictions, and making space, contact Apple Support or visit an authorized service provider. A symptom in one protected app is not proof of hardware failure, while a missing or permanently unresponsive system control after all software steps may require device diagnostics.
