How to Fix OBS Sources Not Showing
OBS source not showing in preview or recording? Isolate the cause and work through reversible fixes: visibility, layer order, capture method, permissions and device conflicts.
When a source in OBS Studio appears in the Sources list but shows nothing in the preview, or shows only a black or empty frame, the cause is usually a setting, a permission or a conflict rather than broken hardware. This guide helps you narrow down where the fault sits and then try fixes that are easy to undo.
Identify the symptom and environment
Start by writing down exactly what you see. A source that is missing entirely, a source with a red outline but no image, a black rectangle and an image that appears in the preview but not in the stream or recording point to different causes.
Note the following before changing anything:
- The source type: Display Capture, Window Capture, Game Capture, Video Capture Device, Browser source, Image or Media source.
- Your operating system and its version, and your OBS version, shown in Help > About.
- When it happens: always, only after a restart, only with one game or app, or only after an OBS or operating system update.
- Whether other sources in the same scene display normally.
Isolate where the fault occurs
Work from the outside in: the capture target, the operating system, then OBS itself.
- Hardware and connection: for a webcam or capture card, check whether another app can show the image. If no app can, the problem is upstream of OBS, such as the cable, port, power or device.
- Operating system permissions: if other apps also fail to capture the screen or camera, check privacy settings before changing OBS.
- App selection: if the device works elsewhere but not in OBS, the problem is likely a source setting, a conflict with another app holding the device, or the capture method.
- Scene layout: if a new test source of the same type displays correctly in a fresh scene, the original scene's layering or transform is the likely cause.
Creating a new, empty scene with a single new source is a quick way to tell a configuration problem from a capture problem without disturbing your existing setup.
Try reversible fixes in order
Check visibility and the active scene
In the Sources dock, make sure the eye icon next to the source is turned on and that you are viewing the scene that contains it. If Studio Mode is enabled, the left pane is the preview and the right pane is what goes live; a source added to the preview scene will not appear in the program output until you transition.
Check layer order and position
Sources higher in the list are drawn on top. A full-screen image or capture placed above another source will hide it, so move the missing source to the top temporarily. If the source is selected but you cannot see it, it may be scaled down, cropped away or positioned off the canvas. Right-click the source and use Transform > Reset Transform or Fit to screen, then adjust it again.
Review the source properties
Double-click the source to open its properties and confirm it points at the right target: the correct monitor for Display Capture, the correct window for Window Capture, or the correct device for Video Capture Device. Windows and devices can change names or identifiers after updates or reconnecting, leaving the source pointing at something that no longer exists.
For Window Capture and Display Capture on Windows, the properties include a capture method option. If the image is black, switch to a different method, apply it and check the preview. Available options depend on your OBS and Windows versions.
Grant screen and camera permissions
On macOS, OBS needs permission for screen recording and, for webcams, the camera. Look under System Settings > Privacy & Security; the screen recording entry is labelled differently on different macOS versions. After enabling OBS, quit and reopen it, because the permission is often only picked up on launch.
On Windows, check Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and make sure camera access and desktop app access are allowed. Wording varies between Windows 10 and Windows 11.
On Linux with a Wayland session, traditional screen and window capture sources may not work; use the PipeWire-based capture source if your OBS build provides it and approve the system prompt that appears.
Free a camera or capture card held by another app
Many webcams and capture cards can be used by only one app at a time. Close video call apps, browser tabs using the camera and vendor utilities, then open the Video Capture Device properties and select the device again, or toggle the source visibility off and on. If the device offers several resolution or frame rate options, try a common combination it supports, since an unsupported mode can produce a blank image.
Check the graphics adapter on laptops with two GPUs
On some Windows laptops with both integrated and dedicated graphics, Display Capture shows black when OBS runs on a different GPU from the one driving the screen. Windows graphics settings let you choose which GPU an app uses; the location of this setting differs between Windows versions. Change the preference for OBS, restart it and test. Note that Game Capture may need the opposite choice, so test the source you actually use.
Refresh Browser and Game Capture sources
For a Browser source, open its properties and use the option to refresh the page cache, and confirm the page address and dimensions are correct. For Game Capture, try capturing a specific window instead of any full-screen application, and make sure the game is running before you expect an image. Some games only allow capture when OBS runs with the same privilege level as the game.
Confirm the result
After each change, check the original symptom under the same conditions in which it appeared. If the source failed only after restarting the computer, restart and check again. If it was missing from recordings, make a short test recording and play it back, because the recording reflects the program output rather than the preview.
If the image appears but stutters or looks degraded, that is a separate issue involving frame rate, encoding or bitrate settings, not source visibility. Change one setting at a time so you know which fix worked, and avoid disabling security software or installing drivers from unknown sources as a shortcut.
If the problem remains
Keep a record of what you observed: the source type, the OBS and operating system versions, which fixes you tried and what changed. The OBS log is the most useful evidence; open it from Help > Log Files > View Current Log and look for lines mentioning the failing source or device. Logs can include system and device details, so review them before sharing with anyone.
If a camera or capture card shows no image in any app, on another port or with another cable, contact the device manufacturer's support. If it works everywhere except OBS, the issue is more likely software-related, and the OBS community support channels are the better place to start. A blank source on its own is not proof that the hardware has failed.
