How to Fix MTP Driver Problems on Windows 11

Phone or camera not showing up in File Explorer on Windows 11? Isolate the cause and repair the MTP driver with built-in, reversible steps.

MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) is how Windows 11 browses files on many Android phones, cameras, audio recorders and media players. When the MTP driver fails, the device usually still charges, but its storage never appears in File Explorer. The steps below use only tools built into Windows and the device itself, starting with the least invasive.

Identify the symptom and environment

MTP faults show up in a few recognisable ways. The device may charge but not appear under This PC, or it may appear with no storage inside. Device Manager may list it under Other devices with a yellow warning icon, often named MTP or with the device model name. Windows may also show a notification that the device driver could not be installed.

Before changing anything, write down the following so you can tell later whether a step helped:

  • The exact device model and whether it is a phone, camera or other media device
  • Whether the problem happens on every connection or only sometimes
  • Whether it started after a Windows update, a device update or new software
  • Which USB port and cable you used, and whether a hub or dock was involved
  • Any error code shown in the device's Properties window in Device Manager

Isolate where the fault occurs

An MTP connection depends on several links: the cable, the USB port, the device's own USB mode, the Windows driver and any app that grabs the device when it connects. Check them separately rather than all at once.

  • Cable: some cables carry power only. If another cable makes the device appear, the original cable was the cause.
  • Port: connect directly to the computer instead of through a hub, dock or front-panel port.
  • Device mode: many phones default to charging only. Unlock the device and look for a USB notification or setting that offers file transfer or MTP. The wording differs between manufacturers.
  • Windows driver: if the device appears with a warning in Device Manager, the problem is on the Windows side.
  • Apps: manufacturer sync tools and photo import apps can hold the connection. Close them and reconnect.
  • Second computer: if the device works elsewhere with the same cable, the issue is likely specific to this PC. If it fails everywhere, look at the device or cable.

Try reversible fixes in order

Work through these one at a time and reconnect the device after each, noting what changes. Menu labels below reflect current Windows 11 releases; some wording and locations differ between versions and editions.

  • Unlock and set the mode. Keep the device unlocked while connecting and choose file transfer or MTP in its USB options. Expected result: the device appears under This PC within a few seconds.
  • Restart both devices. A restart clears a stuck driver state on the PC and a stuck USB service on the device.
  • Open Device Manager. Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager. Look under Portable Devices, Other devices and Universal Serial Bus devices. If nothing appears, choose View, then Show hidden devices.
  • Assign the built-in MTP driver. Right-click the affected device, choose Update driver, then Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. Select MTP USB Device if it is listed, or a matching entry under Portable Devices. Expected result: the warning icon disappears and the device moves to Portable Devices.
  • Reinstall the device entry. Right-click the device and choose Uninstall device. Leave any option to delete the driver software unticked. Unplug the device, wait a moment and reconnect so Windows reinstalls it.
  • Reinstall the Windows MTP driver package. If MTP USB Device is missing from the list, open the INF folder inside the Windows folder, find wpdmtp.inf, right-click it and choose Install. On Windows 11 this option may sit under Show more options. Administrator rights are required.
  • Check Windows Update. Open Settings, then Windows Update, then Advanced options, then Optional updates. Install driver updates offered for your device or USB controller. Avoid third-party driver download sites.
  • Check for an N edition. Windows 11 N editions ship without media components that MTP relies on. If Settings shows an N edition under System, then About, add the Media Feature Pack from Optional features. Its location in Settings varies by Windows 11 version.

Confirm the result

A fix counts only if the original symptom is gone. Check that the device appears under This PC with its storage visible, and that you can open a folder such as DCIM on a camera or phone. Copy one small test file to the computer and one back to the device. In Device Manager, the device should sit under Portable Devices with no warning icon.

Then unplug, reconnect and restart the computer once more. If the device still appears every time, the fix has held. If it works only occasionally, return to the cable and port checks, since intermittent failures often point to the physical connection.

If the problem remains

Keep a short record before contacting anyone: the device model and software version, your Windows 11 version and edition from System, then About, the Device Manager error code, and the hardware IDs from the device's Properties window under Details. Note which cables, ports and computers you tried and what each showed.

If the device fails on several computers with a cable that works for other devices, contact the device manufacturer's support. If several different MTP devices fail on this PC only, the issue is more likely in Windows or the USB controller, and your PC maker or IT support is the better contact. A failed connection alone does not prove the hardware is faulty. For cameras, a memory card reader can serve as a temporary way to copy files while you investigate.
