MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Fix a mirrored background image in Teams

Why your Teams background image or its text looks reversed, how to tell whether others see it that way, and what to change in Teams, your camera software or the image file.

The short answer

In most cases, a Teams background that looks backwards is only reversed in your own self-view. Teams shows your preview like a mirror, so text, logos and asymmetrical scenery in a background image appear flipped to you. The people in the meeting usually see the image the right way round. If that is your situation, the image needs no fixing. You can turn off mirroring of your own preview if the reversed text bothers you.

There is one important exception. If other participants also see the background reversed, the cause is something else. Either the image file itself is reversed, or software between your camera and Teams is flipping the feed. The usual culprits are a virtual camera or a webcam utility. Those cases need a different fix, covered below.

Why the self-view is mirrored

Video apps commonly mirror the local preview because it feels natural. When you raise your right hand, the preview's hand rises on the right, like a bathroom mirror. The outgoing video sent to others is normally not mirrored. A background image is composited into that same view, so it gets mirrored in your preview along with you.

How to isolate the cause

Work through these checks in order. Each one is reversible and changes nothing permanently. Treat each suspected cause as a guess until the check confirms it.

  • 1. Ask someone else what they see. Join a meeting with a colleague, or use a second device signed in as another participant, and ask whether the background text reads correctly. If it does, the reversal is only in your self-view, and you can stop here or turn off preview mirroring.
  • 2. Toggle preview mirroring in Teams. Look in Teams device or camera settings, or in the video effects options during a meeting, for an option to mirror your video. Turning it off should make your preview match what others see. Option names and locations can differ between Teams versions and platforms, so if you cannot find it, check your version's help documentation.
  • 3. Check which camera Teams is using. In Teams device settings, confirm whether the selected camera is your physical webcam or a virtual camera. If it is a virtual camera, temporarily switch to the physical webcam and ask the other participant again. If the reversal disappears for them, the virtual camera software is flipping the feed.
  • 4. Check the webcam's own software. Some manufacturer utilities and virtual camera tools have mirror or flip settings that change the outgoing video itself. If such a setting is enabled, every app receives a reversed picture, including Teams. Turn it off there rather than in Teams.
  • 5. Open the image file on its own. View the background image outside Teams in an ordinary image viewer. If the text is already backwards in the file, the image itself is the problem.

Fixes by cause

What you found | What it means | What to do
Others see the background correctly; only your preview is reversed | Normal self-view mirroring | Nothing is required; optionally turn off mirroring of your own video in Teams settings
Others see it reversed only when a virtual camera is selected | The virtual camera or its effects are flipping the feed | Disable the flip or mirror option in that software, or select the physical webcam in Teams
Others see it reversed even with the physical webcam selected | Webcam utility settings may be mirroring the output | Check the manufacturer's software for mirror or flip settings and disable them
The image file is reversed when opened on its own | The source image is backwards | Flip it horizontally in an image editor, save a copy, and upload the corrected version as your Teams background

Avoid flipping the image file just to make your own preview look right. If others already see the background correctly, pre-flipping it will make it appear backwards to them.

Does any of this affect your webcam microphone?

Mirroring and background replacement are video processing. They do not change how your webcam's built-in microphone captures speech. The one practical knock-on effect involves virtual cameras. If you add or remove a virtual camera, or change devices while troubleshooting, open the Teams device settings afterwards. Confirm that the selected microphone is still the one you intend to use. Video and audio inputs are chosen separately, and changing one does not guarantee the other stays the same. A quick test call or the device settings test can confirm your speech is being picked up by the correct input.

Limits of this guidance

No version-specific documentation or test results were supplied for this guide. The explanation of self-view mirroring reflects how Teams and similar video apps generally behave. Exact menu names, option locations and the availability of a mirroring toggle may vary by Teams version, platform and organisation policy. If the checks above do not resolve the issue, consult the help documentation for your Teams version or your IT administrator. Some background and camera settings can be managed centrally.
