How to Fix Microphone Crackling in Windows 11
Practical steps to find and fix microphone crackling in Windows 11, from app and cable checks to input level, format and troubleshooting settings.
Identify the symptom and environment
First note when the crackling happens. It may be constant, occur only during calls, or appear after a few minutes. Also check whether the noise is heard by you, by the person on the other side, or in a recording. This matters because the microphone input path can differ from playback through speakers or headphones.
Record the device you are using. A headset or USB microphone often follows a different signal path than a built-in laptop microphone. If the problem appears in a specific app such as a video call tool, keep that app in mind while testing other programs.
Isolate where the fault occurs
A short test can separate a connection problem from an app or system setting. First try another recording or calling app. If the crackling disappears there, the original app may be using the wrong input device or applying its own noise processing.
For a removable microphone, disconnect and reconnect it firmly. If possible, use another port or another cable. A loose connection can create intermittent crackle that looks like an audio driver or input level problem.
Check the default input device in Windows. Open Settings, select System, then Sound. Under Input, confirm that the intended microphone is selected. In some apps, the input device is selected separately inside the app settings, so verify that too.
Try reversible fixes in order
Start with the input level. In Settings, System, Sound, select the microphone under Input and reduce the input volume. If the level is set very high, normal speech can exceed what the input path handles cleanly and cause distortion or crackling.
Next check the input format or sample rate. Open Settings, System, Sound, select the microphone, and look for a format or sample rate option. Try a common setting such as 48000 Hz. If the microphone crackles only in a particular app, changing this setting can reveal a mismatch between the input device and the app.
Disable audio enhancements if the option is present. Some devices expose noise suppression or other enhancements in the microphone properties. Turn these off one at a time and test after each change.
Check whether the background noise is being picked up by the wrong device. If a webcam or built-in microphone is selected instead of the headset, the system may amplify room sound and produce a noisy result. Select the intended microphone as the default input device when it is connected.
Confirm the result
Test the original activity that caused the symptom. Speak at a normal distance and volume while recording or during a short test call. Listen back in the same app where the crackling appeared, not only through a different output path.
If possible, make a short test recording before and after changing each setting so you can compare the input level and clarity. Keep notes on which change helped so you can return the other settings to their previous state if needed.
If the problem remains
Keep the observations that show where the fault appears. Note whether the crackling is heard in every app, only in calls, or only with a specific microphone. If another microphone works in the same port and app, the problem is more likely related to the original device or cable.
If a different microphone has the same problem in the same app, an app or driver setting is more likely. Do not treat crackling alone as proof of failed hardware. Contact the device manufacturer or a repair service when the symptom follows one microphone across tested ports, apps and settings.
