How to fix a laptop camera that is not working

Troubleshoot a laptop camera with a black, dark or missing picture. Check privacy controls, camera selection, permissions and app behavior before repair.

A laptop camera that stops working is not necessarily broken. Start by checking the lens cover, camera privacy controls, selected video input and camera permissions. Then compare the picture in another camera application to narrow down whether the problem affects one app or the camera more broadly. Physical damage or a camera that remains unavailable across applications may need manufacturer support.

Start with the symptom you can see

  • Camera missing from an app’s input list: check whether the camera is disabled and whether another application can select it.
  • Permission or access error: check camera access for the application and, for a website, its browser permission.
  • Camera selected but the preview is black: check the lens cover, privacy controls and whether the same camera produces a picture elsewhere.
  • Picture visible but too dark or unclear: check lighting, the lens and available image settings.
  • Picture repeatedly starts and stops: compare applications and note whether the interruption affects the preview, the camera indicator or both.

Check the lens cover and camera controls

Look for a physical shutter over the lens and make sure it is fully open. Check for a camera privacy switch or a keyboard key marked with a camera symbol. A physical shutter can block the picture even while an application has access to the camera.

For an MSI, Lenovo or HP laptop, use instructions for the exact model to identify any camera key, switch or manufacturer privacy setting. No model details or verified manufacturer instructions were supplied, so a particular keyboard shortcut cannot be recommended reliably.

After opening the shutter or enabling the camera, reopen the original preview. If the picture returns, stop troubleshooting. If it remains black or unavailable, check which camera the application is using.

Select the intended camera

Open the affected application’s video settings and select the laptop’s built-in camera. If several inputs appear, an external camera or a virtual camera created by software may be selected instead. Check the preview after changing the selection.

Device detection, permission and input selection are separate checks. A camera appearing in a list means the application lists that input; it does not establish that access is allowed or that the camera can produce usable video. Working microphone audio also does not establish that the webcam works.

Check camera permissions

On Windows or macOS, check the operating system’s camera privacy settings for the affected application. The available controls and their names depend on the operating system version and application type. Allow camera access where appropriate, then reopen the application if needed and retest.

If the problem occurs on a website, also check that site’s camera permission in the browser and its selected video input. Operating system permission for the browser and browser permission for a website are separate controls. After changing permission, reload the page and try the camera again. Allowing access lets that application or site request camera video, so grant it only where intended.

Compare two applications to narrow down the cause

Save any ongoing recording or call, then close applications and browser tabs that may be using the camera. Open a camera application already available on the laptop, select the built-in camera and inspect its preview. Close that application before retesting the original one.

  • If the camera works in the second application, it can capture video in that context. Recheck the original application’s input selection, permissions and video effects.
  • If the camera fails in both applications, check shared causes such as privacy controls and operating system access. Failure in two apps alone does not prove hardware damage.
  • If a local preview works but other people cannot see your video during a call, check the call’s video controls and selected camera. A local preview does not test transmission to other participants.

If the camera remains unavailable, save your work and restart the laptop. Restarting interrupts open applications and calls. Afterward, repeat the original failing task before making more changes.

Fix a black, dark or poor-quality picture

For a completely black preview, first confirm that the shutter is open and the intended camera is selected. Compare the same camera in another application. A black preview by itself cannot distinguish a covered lens, an application problem or a camera fault.

If a picture is visible but dark, add light in front of your face and reduce bright light behind you. If the image improves, lighting contributes to the symptom. If the application offers exposure or brightness controls, adjust one setting at a time and compare the preview.

For a blurry or hazy picture, inspect the lens for fingerprints or an obstruction. Follow the laptop manufacturer’s cleaning guidance before cleaning it. Temporarily disable background blur, filters or other video effects to see whether they contribute to the appearance.

Compare local previews before judging quality from a video call alone. Call quality also involves the application and transmission, so a poor picture seen by another participant does not isolate the camera as the cause. Without the laptop model, camera specifications or a sample image, its expected image quality cannot be assessed.

If the camera turns on and off

For an HP or any other laptop whose camera repeatedly starts and stops, note exactly what changes: the video preview, an error message, the camera indicator or some combination. Close other camera applications, then test one application at a time. An indicator light alone does not establish that usable video is being captured.

If the interruption occurs only in one application, focus on that application’s settings and support guidance. If it occurs across applications after a restart, record any error message and seek model-specific troubleshooting. If the failure appears to coincide with normal lid movement, report that observation to support without repeatedly flexing the lid to reproduce it.

When to seek model-specific support or repair

Contact the laptop manufacturer or a repair provider if the camera remains missing or unusable across applications after the checks above, or if there is visible damage. Provide the exact laptop model, operating system version, error text, when the failure began and which applications you tested. These observations help narrow the investigation; they do not establish a failed component.

Driver, firmware and reset procedures require verified instructions for the specific model and operating system. Those instructions were not supplied, so no such procedure is recommended here. Before following one through manufacturer support, confirm its effects on settings, applications and saved data, and retest the original camera problem after each change.
