MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Fix Iriun webcam not connecting or not working

Get Iriun working in Discord by checking the phone-to-PC link, then camera permission and Discord’s video input.

The essential answer

Discord can use Iriun only after three things are true at the same time: the Iriun Webcam program is running on the computer, the phone app has an active session with that program, and Discord’s camera input is set to Iriun Webcam. Until the phone and desktop program are linked, Discord has no Iriun video device to offer. If Iriun already shows a live preview on the computer but Discord still shows a black tile, a disabled camera control, or another camera, the remaining problem is Discord’s camera permission or which video input Discord has selected.

That answer changes with where the break is. If no app on the computer can see Iriun, including Iriun’s own preview, the phone-to-computer link is down. If other apps show Iriun but Discord does not, leave the Iriun session running and treat Discord as the layer to check. Video capture and microphone capture are separate: a working Iriun picture does not prove Discord is using the phone’s microphone, and a working Discord mic does not prove the Iriun camera is selected.

Checks that narrow the cause

Work through one layer at a time. Each check below only supports a conclusion about that layer. A pass or fail here is not proof about USB hardware, Wi-Fi, Discord, or the phone camera unless that layer is the one you just tested.

1. Confirm Iriun is offering a live camera on the computer

Start the Iriun Webcam program on the computer first, then open the Iriun app on the phone. Look for a live preview in the desktop program. A moving preview means the phone camera is reaching the computer and a virtual webcam is available to other apps. A frozen, black, or missing preview means Discord cannot succeed yet, because Discord can only select a device that the computer already exposes.

If the preview is missing, the usual next split is wireless versus USB. For wireless, phone and computer need a working local network path to each other; being on “some Wi-Fi” is not enough if one device is on guest Wi-Fi, a different band that your router isolates, a VPN, or a hotspot that cannot reach the computer. For USB, the cable and port must carry data, not charge only, and the phone must be unlocked and allowed to use USB for data or tethering as the phone’s USB prompt describes. A charge-only cable can power the phone and still fail this check. This preview test does not tell you whether Discord has permission or which input Discord selected.

2. Confirm the computer has detected a camera device

On Windows, open the camera privacy settings and confirm that camera access is allowed for desktop apps, then check whether Iriun Webcam appears as a camera in the system camera list or in another simple camera app. On macOS, open a built-in camera app or the camera section of system settings and look for Iriun Webcam as an available camera. Seeing Iriun in the system list supports device detection. It does not prove Discord will use that device, and it does not prove the microphone path.

3. Confirm Discord can access a camera, then confirm it selected Iriun

In Discord, open User Settings, then Voice & Video. Check Camera (video input) separately from Input Device (microphone). Device detection, access permission, and active input selection are three different states: the computer can detect Iriun, Discord can still be blocked from cameras, and Discord can have camera access while pointing at the laptop’s built-in camera instead of Iriun Webcam.

  • If Discord’s camera menu is empty or greyed out while Iriun’s desktop preview is live, the next check is camera permission for Discord on the operating system, not the USB cable.
  • If the camera menu lists Iriun Webcam but Discord shows a different camera name as selected, Discord is capturing a different device. Change Camera to Iriun Webcam and use Discord’s camera test or a video call preview.
  • If Discord lists Iriun and it is selected, but the preview is black, stay in Discord only long enough to confirm the selection, then re-check Iriun’s own preview. A black Discord tile with a live Iriun preview points at Discord still holding the wrong device, an exclusive lock by another app, or Discord needing a restart after Iriun connected. A black tile in both places points back at the phone session.
  • If you also need phone audio in Discord, check Input Device on the same Voice & Video screen. Iriun video working is not evidence that Discord is using the phone microphone.

Official Iriun and Discord troubleshooting pages were not supplied for this guide, so these checks are scoped to what each screen can actually show. Do not treat a Discord camera test as proof that USB is healthy, and do not treat a successful Iriun preview as proof that Discord’s Camera setting is Iriun Webcam.

What to change, and how to know it worked

Change only the layer the last check implicated. Start with reversible steps, then retest the original Discord symptom: Iriun should appear in Discord’s Camera list, remain selected, and show a live picture in Discord’s camera preview or a call.

If Iriun’s desktop preview never appears

  • Quit and reopen the Iriun Webcam program on the computer, then reopen the phone app. Confirm the desktop program is running before the phone tries to join.
  • On Wi-Fi, put phone and computer on the same local network, turn off VPN on both, and retry. If they still do not pair, try USB as a second path rather than as proof that Wi-Fi hardware is broken.
  • On USB, use a data-capable cable and a direct port on the computer. Unlock the phone and accept the USB or data prompt. A failed USB session with a working wireless session points at the cable, port, or USB permission, not at Discord.
  • Keep the phone awake and the Iriun app in the foreground while testing. If the preview appears after that, Discord can be tested next. If it never appears, Discord settings will not fix it.

If the preview is live but Discord does not show Iriun, or shows a black camera

  • Allow camera access for Discord in the operating system’s privacy settings, then fully quit Discord and open it again so it re-reads devices.
  • In Voice & Video, set Camera to Iriun Webcam. If Discord still shows the built-in camera, cycle Camera off and on after the Iriun session is already live.
  • Close other apps that might be holding the virtual camera exclusively, then retest Discord’s preview. A camera lock in another app is not a Discord permission failure.
  • If you recently connected the phone, restart Discord after Iriun is already showing a preview. Discord often enumerates cameras at startup; this restart does not repair a downed phone link.

If USB is the path that will not stay connected

Retest with a known data cable and another USB port after the desktop program is already running. If wireless Iriun works and USB does not, treat that as a USB-path problem and keep using Wi-Fi for Discord until USB pairing succeeds in Iriun’s own preview. If neither path produces a preview, Discord is the wrong place to keep changing settings.

When to stop

Stop changing Discord once Iriun Webcam is selected and Discord’s own camera preview is live. If the Iriun desktop preview is still missing after a data-capable USB retry and a same-network Wi-Fi retry, escalate to Iriun’s own support or documentation for connection pairing. Driver, firmware, and factory-reset steps are not included here because official Iriun and Discord guidance for those actions was not supplied, and those changes can remove devices, sign-ins, or app data. Re-test after every change by looking at Iriun’s preview first, then Discord’s Camera setting and camera preview.
