How to Fix an Integrated Laptop Webcam That Flickers

Step-by-step help for an integrated laptop webcam that flickers in video calls or camera apps, including how to isolate and fix the cause.

Identify the symptom and environment

A flickering laptop camera usually appears as rapid brightness changes, visible horizontal bands, or a pulsing image in the preview window. Note when the effect happens: only in one video call app, in the camera preview, in low light, or after changing a setting. Also record the operating system, the app being used, and whether the problem appears with the built-in webcam only or with another connected camera.

Isolate where the fault occurs

First close every app that might hold the camera open, then reopen only one test app. Try the camera in the built-in Camera app or system camera preview, depending on the operating system. If the image is steady there, the issue is likely isolated to the video call tool or browser settings rather than the camera hardware.

If a browser is involved, open the browser's site permissions and confirm that camera access is allowed for that site. When more than one camera is available, check that the correct camera is selected in the app or browser meeting settings. For Windows 10, also check under privacy settings that camera access is enabled for desktop apps.

Look at the scene lighting before changing software settings. Fluorescent or LED lighting can pulse at a rate that interacts with the camera's exposure and frame rate, producing flicker or moving bands. The same effect can occur near a bright window or a screen whose brightness changes automatically.

Try reversible fixes in order

Start with the lowest-risk changes. Move to a location with steadier lighting and test again. If the room uses fluorescent or LED lights, turn one light off or use daylight while observing the preview. In a video conference app, check the camera or video settings for an anti-flicker option and set it to 50 Hz or 60 Hz to match the local power frequency.

Next, open the camera settings in the meeting app or the operating system camera controls. Remove any automatic low-light adjustment or auto-exposure boost, if available, and watch whether the flicker changes. You can also test the effect of manually lowering the selected camera resolution or frame rate. Different versions of camera utilities and laptop support software may label these controls differently, so look for the closest available option rather than relying on an exact menu path.

If the symptom appears in a browser-based tool, check whether another browser or a desktop app shows the same preview. A switch in the selected input device may help when an app is using a virtual camera instead of the integrated camera. Close screen-sharing or background-replacement effects while testing, because those features can also affect the preview image.

Confirm the result

Return to the app where the flicker first appeared and keep the preview open for at least one minute. Move your hand slowly in front of the camera and watch for repeated pulsing. If the image is stable under the same lighting and the same selected camera, resume normal use with only the settings you changed. If the problem returns after closing and reopening the app, note whether any additional camera effects were re-enabled automatically.

If the problem remains

Write down which apps were tested, which camera was selected, the lighting conditions, and whether changing the anti-flicker setting, resolution, or frame rate made any difference. That record will help support staff avoid repeating checks you have already completed.

Contact the laptop manufacturer's support or a qualified repair service if the flicker follows the integrated camera across different apps, lighting conditions, resolution settings, and frame rates. A steady image in a second camera, when the same app and environment are used, suggests a problem specific to the integrated webcam or its connection, but a flickering preview alone is not proof that the camera hardware has failed. Avoid broad security changes or unapproved driver downloads while trying to resolve the symptom.
