How to Fix Insta360 X3 Webcam Mode Not Showing

Insta360 X3 webcam option missing, or the camera not listed on your computer? Work through ordered, reversible checks to find the cause and confirm the fix.

When the Insta360 X3 won't act as a webcam, the cause is usually in one of three places: the connection, the camera's own USB setting or firmware, or the computer and app settings that decide whether the camera can be seen and used. This guide works through those areas in order, starting with quick checks you can undo, so each result points you to the next step.

The short answer

Webcam use depends on three things. The X3 must be connected to the computer with a cable that carries data. It must be set to its webcam output rather than file-transfer storage. Its firmware must include webcam support. If any of these is missing, the webcam option may not appear on the camera, or the computer may treat the X3 as a storage drive instead of a camera. Once the computer recognises the camera, your operating system and your video app must also be allowed to use it.

"Not showing" can mean two different problems, and they have different fixes:

  • The webcam choice is missing on the camera itself. This points to the cable, the USB connection, the camera's USB setting or the firmware.
  • The camera offers webcam mode, but your computer or app doesn't list the X3. This points to operating-system recognition, permissions, another app holding the camera, or the app needing a restart.

Exact menu names and the firmware version that added webcam support were not available for this guide. Check the current Insta360 support documentation or the Insta360 app for the wording on your firmware. Treat the menu descriptions below as general guidance rather than exact labels.

Before you start

  • A charged X3. Low battery can make connection behaviour harder to interpret.
  • A USB cable known to carry data, not just power. The cable supplied with the camera is the best first choice.
  • A USB port directly on the computer. Avoid hubs, docks and front-panel ports during testing.
  • The video app you plan to use, such as a browser-based call service, a desktop meeting app or recording software.
  • Access to the Insta360 phone app or Insta360's support pages, so you can check firmware status.

Step-by-step: getting webcam mode to appear

1. Reconnect with a known data cable and a direct port

Unplug the X3. Connect it with the supplied cable, or another cable you know transfers files, to a USB port directly on the computer. Many USB-C cables only charge, and a charge-only cable can power the camera without the computer ever seeing it.

How you know it worked: the camera shows a connection prompt or USB status, or the computer reacts to the device in some way, such as a connection sound, a new device or a new drive. If nothing at all happens on either side, try a different cable and port before changing any settings.

2. Check which USB mode the camera is using

The X3 can connect as storage for transferring files or as a webcam. Depending on firmware, the camera may ask which mode to use when you plug it in, or it may follow a USB mode option in its settings menu. If the computer shows the X3 as a drive containing photos and videos, it is in file-transfer mode, and video apps will not list it as a camera.

Eject the drive safely. Choose the webcam option when the camera prompts you, or change the USB setting in the camera's menu. Then unplug and reconnect.

How you know it worked: the X3 no longer mounts as a storage drive, and the camera's screen shows that it is in webcam or camera-output use.

3. Update the firmware if the webcam option doesn't exist at all

If no webcam choice appears in the connection prompt or the settings, the installed firmware may predate the feature or may need updating. Check the firmware version and available updates through the Insta360 app or Insta360's official firmware page, and follow their update instructions. Keep the camera charged during the update and don't disconnect it partway through.

How you know it worked: after the update and a restart, the webcam option appears when you connect the camera, or in its settings.

4. Confirm the computer recognises the camera

Before opening a call app, check that the operating system itself sees the X3 as a camera:

  • Windows: open Device Manager and look under Cameras or Imaging devices for an entry that appears when the X3 is plugged in and disappears when you unplug it.
  • macOS: open System Information and look under the USB section for the connected device. The built-in Camera app, or any app with a camera selector, should also list it.

How you know it worked: the X3 shows up as a camera device. This only confirms recognition. It does not yet show that video comes through.

5. Allow camera access in the operating system and browser

Even a recognised camera can be blocked by privacy settings. Camera permission is the setting that controls which apps may use a camera.

  • Windows: in Settings, under Privacy & security, open Camera and make sure camera access is on, both overall and for the app you're using, including desktop apps.
  • macOS: in System Settings, under Privacy & Security, open Camera and enable the app you're using. Some apps must be quit and reopened before a permission change takes effect.
  • Browsers: when a call site asks for camera access, choose Allow. If you blocked it earlier, open the site's permissions from the icon next to the address bar and change Camera to Allow, then reload the page.

How you know it worked: the app or site no longer shows a blocked-camera warning, and the X3 appears in its camera list.

6. Close other apps and restart the video app

Many apps only check for cameras when they start. If the meeting app or browser was already open when you plugged in the X3, quit it completely and reopen it. Also close anything else that might be using the camera, such as Insta360 desktop software, other meeting apps, streaming or recording tools, and other browser tabs with calls open. On many systems, a camera that is in use by one app is unavailable to others.

How you know it worked: the X3 appears in the app's video or camera settings and you can select it.

7. Check that live video actually appears

Select the X3 in the app's camera settings and watch the preview. Being able to select the camera and seeing a live, moving image are separate results, so check for real motion, for example by waving a hand in front of the lens.

What this test shows: the camera can deliver video to that app on that computer.

What it doesn't show: how the picture looks to other people on a call. That depends on the call service's compression and on network speed. It also doesn't show how the image is framed in a call, because this guide has no details on how the X3's 360-degree footage is laid out in webcam mode. A short test call or recording with someone else gives a better check of call quality.

What about the microphone?

No information was available for this guide on whether the X3 offers audio input in webcam mode, or how it would be labelled. Check your app's microphone list after connecting. If an X3 entry appears, select it and watch the app's input meter while you speak. Keep these three results separate: the microphone being listed, the input meter moving, and other people hearing you clearly. Only a test call or a test recording confirms the last one. If you're unsure, use your computer's built-in microphone or a dedicated microphone for calls.

Narrowing down the cause

Each result below suggests a likely area to look at. These are possibilities to test, not firm diagnoses.

What you see | Possible cause | Next step
Nothing happens on the camera or computer when you connect | Charge-only or faulty cable, bad port, or hub problem | Try the supplied cable in a direct port on the computer, then a second port
The X3 appears as a storage drive | Camera is in file-transfer mode | Eject the drive, choose webcam mode on the camera or in its USB setting, then reconnect
No webcam choice anywhere on the camera | Firmware lacks the feature or is out of date | Check for and install updates through the Insta360 app or official firmware page
The operating system lists the camera, but your app doesn't | App opened before connecting, or another app holding the camera | Quit the app fully, close other camera apps, reopen
The app lists the X3 but shows a black screen or an error | Permission blocked, or camera busy in another app | Check operating-system and browser camera permissions, close other apps, reconnect
Works in one app but not another | Permission or camera selection specific to that app | Check that app's permission and its camera selector
Works on one computer but not another | Settings, ports or drivers on the computer that fails | Compare permissions and ports on the failing computer, and check its system updates

If none of this works

Once you have tried a known-good data cable in a direct port, confirmed the firmware is current, selected webcam mode, checked permissions and restarted with other camera apps closed, run one final test. Restart both the camera and the computer, connect the X3, and open a single app that lists cameras.

If the X3 still never shows up as a camera on any computer, contact Insta360 support. Include your firmware version, your computer's operating system and version, what the camera's screen shows when connected, and whether the computer recognises it as a drive, as a camera or not at all. Those details help separate a settings problem from a possible hardware fault.
