MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

How to fix a Discord webcam that keeps loading

Discord camera preview or video stuck loading? Work through ordered, reversible checks for hardware, Discord settings, OS permissions and browser access, and retest at each step.

When Discord's camera preview or your video in a call shows a loading spinner that never resolves, Discord usually cannot get a working video stream from the camera. Common reasons include another app already using the camera, an operating-system privacy setting that blocks Discord, the wrong camera being selected, a hardware acceleration conflict, or an app or driver glitch. The fix is usually to work through a short series of reversible checks, retesting after each one, until the preview appears.

First, figure out where it is loading

Two situations look alike but point to different causes, so check which one you have before changing anything.

  • Your own preview never loads: the spinner appears in Discord's video settings or in your own call tile. This usually means Discord cannot open the camera or receive frames from it. Most of this guide covers this case.
  • Your preview works, but other people see your video loading or frozen: Discord is capturing video, but the stream is not reaching others well. Connection quality is the more likely cause here, and the camera itself is less likely to be at fault.

Before you start

  • Know whether you use the Discord desktop app or Discord in a web browser. Permissions are handled differently in each.
  • If you use an external webcam, make sure you can reach its cable and USB port.
  • Save any work in other apps. Some steps involve closing programs or restarting.

Use Discord's Test Video as your retest

Open User Settings (the gear icon near your username), go to Voice & Video, and find the video settings section. Choose your camera from the camera dropdown and click Test Video. If a live image of you appears, Discord can open the camera and receive video from it. Run this test again after each fix below.

Test Video only checks your local preview. It does not show how your video looks to others, whether your connection can carry the stream, or whether a particular server lets you turn on video. A working preview means camera access and capture are fine. It does not guarantee good call quality.

Step-by-step fixes, from quickest to most involved

1. Close other apps that might be using the camera

On many systems, only one app can use a webcam at a time. Video-call apps, browser tabs with an active call, camera utilities and streaming or recording software can all hold the camera and leave Discord waiting. Fully quit these apps, including any running in the system tray or menu bar, then run Test Video again.

Success check: the preview appears. If it does, one of the closed apps was probably holding the camera.

2. Confirm the right camera is selected

Open the camera dropdown in Discord's Voice & Video settings and look at every option. Laptops with an external webcam, or computers with virtual camera software installed, may list several devices. A virtual camera is software that appears as a camera to other apps. If the program behind it isn't running, it may show nothing or a blank stream. Choose your physical webcam and test again.

Success check: the preview loads with the correct camera. If your camera isn't listed at all, go to step 4 for the physical checks.

3. Fully restart Discord

Closing the Discord window often leaves the app running in the background. Quit it completely, for example from the system tray icon on Windows or the menu bar on macOS. Then reopen it and run Test Video. While Discord is closed, allow any pending update to install.

4. Check the camera itself

  • Look for a physical privacy shutter, a camera switch, or a keyboard key that turns the camera off. Many laptops have one.
  • For a USB webcam, unplug it, wait a few seconds, and plug it into a different port. Connect it directly to the computer if possible, not through a hub.
  • Open the camera in another app, such as your operating system's built-in camera app. If it also fails there, the problem is likely the hardware, a cable, or a driver, not Discord.

This step narrows things down. If the camera works in other apps but not Discord, the cause is probably a permission or a Discord setting. If it fails everywhere, focus on the hardware and drivers.

5. Check operating-system camera permissions

Windows and macOS both have privacy controls that can stop an app from using the camera. When blocked, Discord may show a loading spinner rather than a clear error.

  • Windows: open Settings, go to Privacy & security, then Camera. Make sure camera access is on, that apps can access your camera, and that desktop apps are allowed to access your camera. Discord's desktop app falls under desktop apps.
  • macOS: open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, then Camera, and make sure Discord is switched on. macOS may ask you to quit and reopen Discord before the change takes effect.

Some security or antivirus programs include their own webcam protection that can block apps separately from the operating system. If you use one, check whether it is blocking Discord.

6. If you use Discord in a browser, check the site permission

In a browser, the browser itself controls camera access for each site. Click the icon at the left end of the address bar while Discord is open, check the camera permission, and set it to allow. Then reload the page. Also make sure the browser has camera access in your operating system's privacy settings from step 5. As a comparison test, try the desktop app or another supported browser. If it works there, the problem is limited to the original browser's settings.

7. Toggle hardware acceleration

Hardware acceleration means Discord uses your graphics hardware for some video and display work. On some systems this causes video problems. Discord's settings include hardware acceleration options. Where they appear depends on the app version, but look in the Advanced section and in Voice & Video. Turn the option off, let Discord restart if it asks to, and run Test Video. If nothing changes, turn it back on so you're testing one change at a time.

8. Reset voice and video settings

The Voice & Video settings page includes an option to reset voice settings to their defaults. This undoes custom choices that may be interfering, but you'll need to set up your microphone and other preferences again afterward.

9. Update the camera driver and the operating system

A driver is the software that lets your operating system talk to the camera. If the camera failed in other apps too, or stopped working after a system update, check for operating-system updates and for a driver or software update from your computer or webcam manufacturer. On Windows, Device Manager lists the camera under Cameras or Imaging devices. A warning icon there points to a driver problem.

10. Clear Discord's cache or reinstall

If the camera works in other apps and permissions are correct, damaged local app data is a possible cause. Quit Discord completely first. On Windows, Discord's cache folders are inside its data folder, which you can open by typing this into the Run dialog (Windows key + R):

%appdata%\discord

Delete the Cache, Code Cache and GPUCache folders inside it, then reopen Discord. If that doesn't help, uninstall Discord, restart the computer, and install a fresh copy. Reinstalling doesn't delete your account or servers, but you may need to log in again and redo your app settings.

If your preview works but others see your video loading

If Test Video and your own call tile look fine but other people report a spinner or frozen frames, the video is probably not reaching them reliably. Possible causes include a weak or busy network connection, other uploads running at the same time, a VPN, or a problem on the viewer's side.

  • Pause large uploads and downloads, cloud backups, and streaming on your network.
  • If you use a VPN, briefly disconnect it and test again.
  • Try a wired connection, or move closer to your router.
  • Ask whether everyone sees the problem or only one person. If only one person does, the cause is more likely on their end.

Server permissions are a separate issue. If a server doesn't let you use video in a channel, the camera option is usually unavailable rather than stuck loading. If video works in one server but not another, ask that server's moderators whether video is enabled for your role.

Quick reference: what each result suggests

What you observe | Likely area | Next step
Camera fails in every app | Hardware, cable, or driver | Step 4, then step 9
Camera works in other apps, not in Discord | Permissions or Discord settings | Steps 5, 7, 8, then 10
Camera missing from Discord's dropdown | Connection, privacy setting, or driver | Steps 4, 5, and 9
Works after closing another app | That app was holding the camera | Close it before Discord calls
Fails in the browser, works in the desktop app | Browser site or browser permission | Step 6
Your preview works, others see loading | Network or viewer's side | Network checks above

When to escalate

If the camera works in other apps, permissions are correct, and a fresh install still shows the spinner, contact Discord support. Tell them your operating system, whether you use the desktop app or a browser, your camera model, and which steps you've already tried. Also check Discord's official service status, since an outage can affect video for many users at once. If the camera fails in every app even after driver and system updates, contact the computer or webcam manufacturer, because the device itself may be faulty.

No figures for loading times, required internet speeds, or how often each cause occurs were available for this guide, so none are given here. Treat each cause above as a possibility to rule out, not a confirmed diagnosis.
