How to fix a Discord webcam that keeps freezing
Discord webcam freezing? Find out whether the camera, the Discord app, your computer or your connection is the cause, then fix it step by step and confirm the result.
The short answer
A Discord webcam that freezes is usually caused by one of four things: another app competing for the camera, a loose or underpowered USB connection, a video-processing setting in Discord that doesn't suit your computer, or an upload connection that can't keep up during the call. The fastest route is to find which of these applies before changing anything else. Start by checking whether the freeze happens on your own screen or only for the people watching you. Then test the camera outside Discord, and work through the reversible fixes below in order.
One distinction matters throughout. Discord being allowed to use the camera, the camera actually producing a moving picture, and that picture arriving smoothly for other people are three separate things. A fix for one does not guarantee the others.
First, work out where the freeze happens
Ask someone in the call what they see, or compare your self-view with their description. Use the result to decide where to start.
| What you observe | Where to look first |
| Your own preview or self-view freezes | The camera, its connection, other apps using it, or Discord's video processing on your computer |
| Your self-view is smooth but others see you frozen or stuttering | Your network upload, or the load on your computer while it sends video |
| The camera also freezes in another app, such as the built-in camera app | The camera hardware, cable, USB port or driver, not Discord |
| It freezes only in the Discord desktop app, not in Discord in a web browser | Discord desktop app settings, such as hardware acceleration, or the app needs updating |
| It freezes only while a game or other heavy program is running | Computer load, especially the processor or graphics card |
Before you start
- Have a way to see your camera inside Discord. The camera preview under User Settings, Voice & Video, works for this, as does a call with a friend who can tell you what they see.
- Know how to fully quit Discord. Closing the window is not enough. On Windows, right-click the Discord icon in the system tray and choose Quit Discord. On a Mac, use Command-Q or choose Quit from the menu.
- If you use a USB webcam, have another USB port free. A spare cable helps if the camera's cable is detachable.
- Note your current Discord settings before you toggle anything, so you can put them back.
Step-by-step fixes
Work through these in order. Each step is reversible and comes with a way to tell whether it helped. Stop when the freezing stops.
1. Restart the camera feed and reselect the device
In the call, turn your camera off and back on. If that doesn't help, open User Settings, then Voice & Video, and check that the correct camera is selected. If you have more than one camera or a virtual camera listed, choose a different one and then switch back. Success check: the preview shows smooth movement when you wave a hand slowly in front of the lens.
2. Close other apps that might be using the camera
Video-calling apps, streaming or recording software, browser tabs with a call open, and camera utilities installed by the manufacturer can all hold onto the camera or compete with Discord for it. Quit them completely, not just minimize them, then fully quit and reopen Discord. Success check: the preview stays smooth for a few minutes with nothing else running.
3. Test the camera outside Discord
With Discord fully closed, open the Camera app on Windows or Photo Booth on a Mac and watch the picture for a few minutes. This is the key step for telling a hardware problem apart from a Discord problem. If the picture freezes here too, the cause is the camera, its connection or its driver, so focus on steps 4 and 7. If it stays smooth here but freezes in Discord, the camera itself is probably fine. Continue with steps 5 and 6.
4. Check the physical connection
For a USB webcam, plug it directly into the computer rather than through a hub, dock or front-panel port, and try a different port. Unpowered hubs and loose connectors can cause the camera to drop out briefly, which looks like a freeze. If the cable is detachable, try another one, and make sure it isn't strained or bent sharply at the plug. Built-in laptop cameras can't be checked this way, so skip ahead. Success check: the camera stays smooth in the built-in camera app and in Discord after the change.
5. Fully quit, update and retest Discord
Quit Discord completely and reopen it. The desktop app normally checks for updates when it starts. To narrow things down further, sign in to Discord in a web browser and test video there. If video is smooth in the browser but not in the desktop app, the problem lies with the desktop app's settings or installation, not with the camera or your connection. Success check: the desktop app preview is now as smooth as the browser version.
6. Try the opposite hardware acceleration setting
Hardware acceleration means Discord hands some video work to your graphics hardware instead of doing it all on the main processor. On some computers this helps, and on others it causes stutters or freezes. Discord has had related toggles in Voice & Video, in the video codec options, and in the Advanced section of User Settings. Exact names and locations can change between Discord versions. Note how each is currently set, switch one to the opposite setting, let Discord restart if it asks, and retest. Change one setting at a time so you know which one made the difference. If nothing improves, set it back. Success check: a few minutes of smooth video in the preview and in a call.
7. Update graphics and camera drivers, or the operating system
A driver is the software that lets your operating system talk to a piece of hardware. On Windows, check for updates in Windows Update and from your graphics card maker. You can also look at the camera's entry in Device Manager under Cameras or Imaging devices. A warning icon there points to a driver problem. On a Mac, camera support comes through macOS updates. If the camera maker offers its own software, check it for firmware updates too. Success check: retest in the built-in camera app first, then in Discord.
8. Confirm camera permissions
Missing permission more often shows up as a black screen or no camera at all than as freezing. It's still worth confirming, especially after an operating-system update. On Windows, go to Settings, Privacy & security, Camera, and make sure camera access and access for desktop apps are turned on. On a Mac, go to System Settings, Privacy & Security, Camera, and make sure Discord is allowed. If you use Discord in a browser, check that the browser has camera permission for Discord. Fully restart Discord or the browser after changing a permission. Success check: Discord shows a live picture. Permission only grants access. It doesn't prove the video will stay smooth, so keep watching the preview.
9. Turn off video effects and virtual cameras while testing
Virtual call effects, such as Discord's video backgrounds or filters added by third-party virtual-camera software, add processing between the camera and the call. Switch off any background or filter in Discord's video settings. If you're using a virtual camera, select the physical camera directly. These effects are separate from your real physical background and have nothing to do with edited photo backgrounds. Only the live effect affects call performance. Success check: if the video is smooth without the effect, the effect, or the load it puts on your computer, was the likely cause.
10. Reduce load on the computer
If freezing only happens during games, streams or other heavy work, the computer may not have enough spare capacity to process video at the same time. Close unneeded programs. On a laptop, plug in the charger and turn off battery-saver or low-power modes, which can limit performance. If the camera maker's software lets you choose resolution or frame rate, try a lower setting. Success check: the video stays smooth with the same activity running.
11. Improve the connection if only others see the freeze
If your preview is smooth but others see you frozen, your upload connection may be the bottleneck. Try a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi, or move closer to the router. Pause large uploads, cloud backups and other streams on your network, and ask others on the same network to do the same. Restarting the router can also help. If Discord has a known problem in your area, your connection may not be at fault. Discord's official status page reports service problems. Success check: the people in the call confirm your video now moves smoothly.
What a successful test does and doesn't prove
A smooth preview in Discord's settings shows that Discord can use the camera and that the camera and your computer can capture and display steady video. It doesn't show how your video looks to others. That also depends on your upload connection, their connection and Discord's servers. A smooth test in the built-in camera app shows the camera and driver are working but says nothing about Discord's settings. For a full check, confirm the preview is smooth, then ask someone in a real call how your video looks after several minutes. Some freezes only appear once the camera or computer has been working for a while.
When to escalate
- The camera freezes in every app, on every port, even after driver updates: the camera may be faulty. Contact the manufacturer, check the warranty, or try a different camera to confirm.
- A different camera works smoothly in Discord on the same computer: the original camera or its cable is the most likely cause.
- The camera works everywhere except the Discord desktop app, even after updating and trying both hardware acceleration settings: use Discord in a browser for now and contact Discord support. Tell them which steps you've already tried.
- Others see you freeze even on a wired connection with nothing else using the network: check Discord's status page for service problems, and consider asking your internet provider about upload problems.
- A built-in laptop camera freezes in every app after operating-system and driver updates: contact the computer maker's support.
What this guide can't tell you
This guide doesn't give a minimum upload speed, a target frame rate or recommended resolution figures for Discord video. No verified numbers were available for those, and Discord's requirements can change. Discord's own help documentation is the place to check current requirements. Setting names and menu locations in Discord, Windows and macOS also change between versions, so the labels here may differ slightly from what you see. Look for the closest match.
