MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

How to fix Discord webcam flickering and visual glitches

Find out why your webcam flickers or glitches in Discord, separate lighting, hardware, app and network causes, and confirm each fix works.

The short answer

Webcam flickering in Discord usually comes from one of four places: the lighting in your room, the camera or its connection, Discord's own video settings, or the network connection during a call. The fastest fix is to find out where the problem starts. Open your camera in a different app. If the flicker shows up there too, Discord is not the cause, so look at lighting, the camera and its drivers. If the image is clean everywhere except Discord, work through Discord's settings, especially hardware acceleration and video effects.

It also matters who sees the problem. Flicker in your own preview happens on your computer. If your preview looks fine but other people describe blocky, frozen or smeared video, the cause is more likely bandwidth or call quality than the camera.

Match the symptom to a likely area

The table below lists common patterns and the area each one points to. These are starting points, not diagnoses. Confirm each one with the checks in the sections that follow.

What you see | Where it appears | Area to check first
Rolling bands or steady pulsing brightness | In every app | Room lighting and the camera's anti-flicker setting
Random flashes, black frames or the camera dropping out | In every app | USB connection, cable, hub or drivers
Flicker, green or pink frames, or tearing | Only in Discord | Discord hardware acceleration, video effects or graphics drivers
Grainy, shimmering image in a dim room | In every app | Not enough light, which forces the camera to amplify the image
Clean preview, but others see blocky or frozen video | Only on the receiving side | Network connection and upload bandwidth
Glitches start when another camera tool is open | Discord and the other tool | Conflict with a virtual camera or the manufacturer's camera software

Before you start

  • Close every other app that might use the camera, such as other video-call apps, streaming software and the manufacturer's camera utility.
  • Find out whether you use the Discord desktop app or Discord in a web browser, because the settings differ.
  • Have a second app ready to open the camera, such as the built-in Camera app on Windows or Photo Booth on macOS.
  • If you can, ask a friend to join a short video call so you can compare what you see with what they see.

Step 1: Test the camera outside Discord

Quit Discord completely, including from the system tray or menu bar, so it releases the camera. Then open the camera in your operating system's built-in camera app and watch it for about a minute under your usual lighting.

How to read the result: if the flicker or glitching appears here too, the problem is lighting, the camera, its connection or its drivers, so go to Steps 2 to 4. If the image is steady here, the camera and lighting are probably fine and Discord or the call connection is the more likely cause, so go to Step 5.

What this test proves and what it doesn't: a clean image in another app shows that the camera can capture steady video on your computer. It does not show that Discord has permission to use the camera, and it says nothing about how your video looks to other people on a call.

Step 2: Rule out lighting flicker

Many LED and fluorescent lights pulse rapidly with the power supply. You can't see it, but a camera can pick it up as horizontal bands or a steady shimmer. Dimmable lights and low-cost LED bulbs are common culprits. In the US, household power runs at 60 Hz, and camera anti-flicker settings use that value to time exposure against the pulsing.

  • Turn off the overhead light and use daylight or a different lamp for a moment, then check whether the banding stops.
  • If dimmed lights cause the problem, set them to full brightness.
  • Open your camera's settings, either in the manufacturer's software or the operating system's camera settings, and find an option called anti-flicker, power line frequency or something similar. In the US, set it to 60 Hz. Not every camera or system offers this setting.
  • Add more even light on your face, because a dim scene makes the camera amplify the image and produces grain that can look like shimmering.

Success check: the bands or pulsing go away in the built-in camera app. If you change the anti-flicker setting through the manufacturer's software, reopen Discord and check whether the change carries over. Some settings apply to every app and some do not.

Step 3: Check the physical connection

Random black frames, sudden dropouts or a camera that disconnects and reconnects often point to the connection rather than the image itself.

  • Plug an external webcam straight into a USB port on the computer instead of using a hub, dock, front-panel port or extension cable.
  • Try a different USB port, and a different cable if the camera's cable is removable.
  • If you must use a hub, try one that has its own power supply.
  • Check that the cable is not bent sharply or pulled tight, then watch for glitches when you move it gently.

Success check: the dropouts stop on the new port or cable. If the glitches follow the camera to every port and every app, the camera itself may be faulty. Testing it on a second computer is the clearest way to confirm that.

Step 4: Update or reinstall drivers

Drivers are the software your operating system uses to talk to hardware. Outdated or damaged camera or graphics drivers can cause flickering, odd colors or frames that won't display properly.

  • Install the latest operating system updates.
  • Update your graphics drivers through the graphics card maker's software or your computer manufacturer's support tools.
  • On Windows, if the camera still glitches, open Device Manager, remove the camera, then unplug and reconnect it or restart so Windows reinstalls it.
  • If the camera has its own software from the manufacturer, update it or temporarily uninstall it to see whether it causes the conflict.

Success check: retest in the built-in camera app first, then in Discord.

Step 5: Fix Discord-only flickering

If the camera looks fine elsewhere, test these Discord settings one at a time and check the video preview in the Voice & Video settings after each change. Menu names can differ between versions and platforms, so if an option isn't where you expect, use the search box in settings.

  • Pick the correct camera: in Voice & Video settings, choose your physical webcam from the camera list. Avoid virtual cameras from streaming or effects software unless you mean to use one.
  • Turn off video backgrounds and effects: virtual backgrounds and blur have to separate you from the room in every frame, and they can cause flickering edges or a shimmering outline. Switch them off, then check whether the glitching stops.
  • Toggle hardware acceleration: Discord can hand some video work to your graphics card. When the graphics driver and Discord don't work well together, the result can be flicker, tearing or colored frames. Look in the Advanced and Voice & Video settings. Turn hardware acceleration off if it's on, or on if it's off, then restart Discord when it asks you to.
  • Restart Discord fully: quit it from the tray or menu bar, not just the window, then reopen it.
  • Update Discord, or reinstall it if problems continue after updating.
  • If you use Discord in a browser, try the desktop app, or try a different browser. This shows whether the browser's own video handling is involved.

Success check: the preview in Discord's settings stays steady for a minute or more. A steady preview confirms that Discord captures clean video locally. It does not yet show how the video looks to others.

Step 6: Check what other people see

Join a short video call with someone you trust and ask them to describe your video. If your preview looks clean but they see blockiness, freezing or smearing, video quality is dropping in transit. That is a connection issue, not a camera issue.

  • Close downloads, streams and cloud backups that compete for your upload bandwidth.
  • Move closer to your router or use a wired connection if you can.
  • Turn off screen sharing during the call if you don't need it.
  • Check whether the problem affects only one viewer. If it does, their connection or device may be the cause.

Success check: the other person reports steady video. Keep in mind that call quality can change with network conditions, so one good call does not guarantee the next.

When to escalate

If the flickering shows up in every app, on every port and on a second computer, the camera is the likely cause, so contact the manufacturer or think about replacing it. If the camera is clean everywhere except Discord, even after you've tried hardware acceleration both ways, turned off effects, updated your drivers and reinstalled Discord, contact Discord support. Tell them which Discord version and operating system you use, which camera you have, and what you've already tried.

What this guide does not cover

No device-specific test results, model-by-model compatibility details or recommended bandwidth figures were available for this guide, so it does not cover those. For model-specific anti-flicker options or known driver problems, check your camera maker's documentation.
