How to Fix a Black Screen in iPhone Screen Recordings

Practical steps to find and fix an iPhone screen recording that comes out black, from permissions and app restrictions to restarting and verifying the result.

Identify the symptom and environment

A black iPhone screen recording usually means the recording ran, but the saved video contains no visible picture from the display. The file may still have audio or show only a dark frame for the full duration. Before changing settings, note which iPhone model and iOS version you are using, which app or screen you tried to record, and whether the issue appears only in that app or everywhere on the device.

Isolate where the fault occurs

Record the Home Screen for a few seconds, then stop and open the clip in the Photos app. If that clip plays normally, the recording feature itself is working and the problem is probably limited to a specific app or content type. Apps that play protected video, such as some streaming services, can deliberately turn the recorded picture black while leaving the interface or audio intact.

Also try recording with Control Center while an app is open and again after fully closing the app from the app switcher. If another screen or app records correctly, the fault is not with the microphone, speaker, or the basic recording function. Keep that working clip as a reference for later comparison.

Try reversible fixes in order

Start with the least disruptive changes and test after each one.

  • Check Screen Recording options: open Control Center, touch and hold the Screen Recording button, and confirm the correct microphone setting is selected for the clip you want to capture. The audio choice does not normally cause a black frame, but it is useful to eliminate a misconfigured recording setup.
  • Try another known app: record a simple built-in screen such as Settings, Notes, or Safari with an ordinary webpage. If those clips show a picture, the black output is tied to the app you first used.
  • Fully close and reopen the affected app: open the app switcher and swipe the app away, then launch it again before starting a new recording.
  • Restart the iPhone: turn the device off, wait briefly, and turn it back on. This clears temporary display or capture issues without deleting data.
  • Check for available iOS updates: open Settings, then General, then Software Update. If an update is available, install it only after backing up important data according to the normal update process for the device.

If a streaming or media app produces a black recording but the Home Screen records normally, that may be expected copy-protection behavior rather than a device fault. In that case, do not change accessibility, developer, or security settings in an attempt to bypass the restriction.

Confirm the result

Record the same screen or app where the problem first occurred and play the clip from beginning to end in Photos. Confirm that the picture is visible throughout the recording and not only in the first frame. If the video still displays correctly after you close and reopen the app, the issue was likely temporary.

If the problem remains

Keep a note of the model, iOS version, affected app, and whether the Home Screen records correctly. Do not treat a black clip as proof that the display, camera, or storage has failed. If the problem affects all screens and continues after a restart and a software update, contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider with the observations you collected. A repair is appropriate only after a support assessment identifies a hardware or system fault.
