How to Fix Audio Output Not Working in Windows
Step-by-step troubleshooting for Windows audio output not working, from device selection to privacy, defaults, sample rate, and driver checks.
Identify the symptom and environment
Start by naming what is failing and when. Note which Windows device is producing no sound, whether the issue affects speakers, headphones, a headset, a monitor, or a USB audio device. Record the app where the problem appears: a browser video call, a media player, a recording tool, or all system sound. Also note whether the issue began after an update, a connection change, or a new app installation. This detail helps separate an output device problem from an application-specific selection or permission issue.
Isolate where the fault occurs
Test the same audio in another app before changing Windows settings. If sound works in one app but not another, the problem may be app volume, browser permission, or in-app output device selection. If no app produces sound, continue with system-level checks. Try a second output device when one is available: plug in headphones or connect another speaker. If a different output device works, the issue is narrowed to the original device, its cable, its port, or the connection. If no output device works, the cause is more likely to be an operating-system setting, driver, or muted default path.
Try reversible fixes in order
Check the default output device
Open Settings, System, Sound. In the output section, select the device you want to use from the dropdown list. Windows may route sound to a different device after a new connection, update, or driver change. While the sound should be playing, watch the master volume slider for movement. If the slider shows activity but you hear nothing, the default path may still be wrong or the device itself may need attention.
Check mute and per-app volume
In the same Sound page, confirm that the output volume is not set to zero and that mute is not enabled. Scroll to Advanced or Volume mixer depending on the Windows version and review the app-specific level. Close any app that is not in use. If a browser tab is muted from the tab itself, the system mixer will not reveal that muted state.
Remove invalid playback devices
Open the legacy sound control panel by choosing More sound settings in the Sound page or by opening the Sound control panel directly. On the Playback tab, right-click an empty area and choose to show disabled and disconnected devices. If an extra device is shown as default or active, right-click it and disable it. Then right-click the intended output device and set it as the default device.
Test the device properties
On the Playback tab, select the intended output device, open Properties, and use the test tone on the Advanced tab if present. Check that the device is enabled and not disabled. On the Levels tab, confirm the output level is above zero and the balance is not pushed fully to one side.
Check the default sample rate
On the Advanced tab, open the default format dropdown. Try a common rate such as 16 bit, 48000 Hz or 24 bit, 48000 Hz, then run the test tone again. Avoid assuming that the highest listed rate is the best choice. If the device becomes silent at one sample rate but works at another, the combination of device, connection, or driver may not support that format reliably.
Disable audio processing effects
On the Playback tab, open Properties and look for an Enhancements, Audio Enhancements, or Spatial sound section depending on the Windows version. Temporarily turn off any enhancement or spatial audio option that is enabled. These features can suppress or redirect output in ways that appear as silence, especially on headsets and monitor audio.
Check Windows privacy settings
Open Settings, Privacy or Privacy and security, then Microphone. Although the title mentions the microphone, this page can control app access to audio input and may affect apps that request both input and output. Keep the relevant facts separate: an output-only app does not need microphone access, while a calling or recording app may stop working if microphone access is off. Review the switch for app access and the list of apps below it.
Check browser camera and microphone permission
If the audio fails in a browser meeting or recording tool, open the site permission control in the address bar or the browser site settings. Confirm that the site is allowed to use the microphone and that the correct input and output devices are selected in the meeting software. Browser permissions affect the site, while the application selection affects which device is used after permission is granted.
Restart the Windows audio services
Open Services, find Windows Audio, and select Restart. Do the same for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder if it is available. This is a reversible step and can clear a temporary service failure. There is no need to stop other services or disable startup entries.
Use the audio troubleshooter
Open Settings, System, Sound, and look for a troubleshoot or run the troubleshooter option under Output or Advanced. Let it check the output device and report any recommended action. Use the recommendation as an observation, not as an automatic change to apply.
Confirm the result
Return to the same app and audio source that first failed. Play the original sound or join a short test call. Confirm that the intended output device is selected, that the volume slider moves when sound is expected, and that the issue does not return after a few seconds. If you changed the default format or disabled enhancements, keep the setting that works and note what was changed so the test can be repeated later.
If the problem remains
Keep a short record of the observations: the affected app, the selected output device, a second device if tested, the Windows version, and the result of the test tone and service restart. Do not treat silence alone as proof that hardware is dead. A cable, port, adapter, dock, or driver can produce the same symptom. Contact device support or arrange repair only when a second device works on the same port and the original device remains silent after the above checks.
