Fix ASUS USB2.0 VGA UVC webcam not working

Troubleshoot an ASUS USB2.0 VGA UVC webcam, check Windows detection and camera permissions, and find the right next step before reinstalling drivers.

Before reinstalling your ASUS webcam, check whether Windows detects it and whether the affected app has permission to use the correct camera. Reinstalling a driver will not resolve a closed privacy shutter, blocked camera access or an app using another video input. The steps below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; the operating system and exact ASUS model were not supplied.

Check the camera controls and connection

If your ASUS device has a camera privacy shutter, open it. If it has a camera-disable key or switch, check its state using the instructions for your exact model. Do not assume that a particular function-key shortcut applies to every ASUS laptop.

If this is an external USB webcam, reconnect it directly to the computer and try another available USB port. A successful test on another port supports a connection-path issue, but does not identify the original port, hub or cable as the cause. For a built-in webcam, skip this step; the USB2.0 device name alone does not mean there is an external cable to reconnect.

Find out whether Windows detects the webcam

Open Device Manager from the Start menu search. Look under Cameras and Imaging devices for the webcam. It may appear as USB2.0 VGA UVC WebCam or under another camera name. If the device is listed, open its Properties and note the device status and any error code.

  • Camera listed without a reported error: Windows detects a camera device, but this does not prove that video capture works. Continue with the Camera app test.
  • Camera listed with an error: Record the exact message. It helps determine the appropriate model-specific troubleshooting step; it does not by itself prove that the driver needs reinstalling.
  • Camera not listed: Restart Windows and check again. If it remains absent, application permissions alone will not explain the missing Device Manager entry. Check model-specific camera-disable controls before pursuing driver or hardware troubleshooting.

Compare the Windows Camera app with the affected app

Close video-call apps, browser camera tabs and other programs that could be using the webcam. Open the Windows Camera app and, if multiple cameras are available, select the ASUS camera. Note whether it shows live video, a black image or an error.

  • Live video works: The selected camera can capture video in the Camera app at that moment. Check the original app’s camera selection and permissions next; this result does not verify another app or browser’s access.
  • The Camera app reports blocked access: Check Windows camera permissions.
  • The Camera app shows a black image or another error: Recheck the shutter and camera-disable control, then record the exact error. A black image alone does not distinguish a driver problem from a physical obstruction or hardware fault.

Correct permissions and camera selection

In Windows 11, open Settings, then Privacy & security, then Camera. In Windows 10, open Settings, then Privacy, then Camera. Enable camera access and the applicable app-access settings. Desktop applications use the desktop-app camera access setting rather than necessarily appearing as individual switches. If a setting is locked by your organization, ask its administrator to review it.

In the affected app’s video settings, select the ASUS webcam explicitly. For a browser-based service, also check that site’s camera permission and selected camera. Reopen the app or reload the page after making changes, then repeat the action that originally failed.

If the original app now shows live video, stop troubleshooting. If the Camera app works but the original app still fails, continue with that app’s settings or support guidance before changing the webcam driver.

Before reinstalling the ASUS webcam driver

The USB2.0 VGA UVC webcam name is not enough to identify the correct ASUS driver package or recovery procedure. You need the exact laptop or webcam model, Windows version and any Device Manager error. No official ASUS guidance or model-specific driver information was supplied, so a particular download, driver-removal procedure or firmware change cannot be verified here.

Use official ASUS support information for that exact model and operating system to establish whether a separate camera driver is offered and whether reinstallation is the prescribed remedy. Avoid choosing a download solely because its name matches the Device Manager label. Removing a device’s driver software can leave the camera unavailable until a suitable driver is restored.

If official model-specific instructions call for reinstallation, follow their prerequisites and restart requirements. Afterward, check Device Manager, test the selected webcam in the Windows Camera app, and retest the original application. Successful installation alone does not establish that the original problem is fixed.

When to escalate

If the webcam remains missing or fails in the Camera app after the applicable checks, contact ASUS support or your organization’s IT team. Provide the exact model, Windows version, device status or error code, and the results of the Camera app test. Those details help determine whether further driver investigation or hardware service is appropriate; the information available here does not establish a hardware failure.

If video works but sound does not, troubleshoot microphone selection and microphone permissions separately. A successful webcam video test does not test microphone audio.
