How to Manage Microphone Permissions in Firefox

Practical Firefox instructions for allowing, blocking, changing and removing microphone permissions, plus how to check system-level microphone access and fix common call or recording problems.

Before you start

Firefox handles microphone access as a site permission, so the process is local to your browser. A site cannot use the microphone until Firefox has permission for that site and the operating system allows Firefox to use the input device. Make sure the microphone is connected or enabled as an input device before you start. On Windows and macOS, Firefox may need operating-system microphone permission in addition to its own site permission.

The procedure below covers current desktop versions of Firefox. Menu names may differ slightly in older versions, but the permission controls are found in the same area of browser settings.

Step-by-step instructions

Use Firefox site settings to allow, block, change or remove microphone access for a specific site. You can also open a settings page that lists all sites with saved microphone permissions.

  • Open the site where you want to use the microphone.
  • Select the padlock or permissions icon in the address bar.
  • Find the microphone or permissions entry and choose Allow, Block, or a temporary option if Firefox shows one.
  • Reload the page if the site did not automatically pick up the change.

To manage saved permissions, open Firefox settings, go to Privacy & Security, and find the Permissions section. Select Settings next to Microphone. The dialog lists sites you have allowed or blocked. Use Remove Website or Remove All Websites to clear saved entries, or Change Blocking Mode if you want Firefox to stop asking for new microphone requests.

If Firefox does not show the site in that list, the site has not requested microphone access yet. Visit the page, start its audio or call feature, and respond to the permission prompt that appears.

Firefox routes audio through the input device selected in the browser or offered by the permission prompt. If the wrong microphone is active, use the device selector in the site or in the Firefox permission prompt, where available. For wider input-device behavior, check the operating-system sound settings.

Check the output

After allowing permission, start the site feature that uses the microphone. Speak or make a test sound and check that the site shows an input level or receives audio. If the site has recording playback, play the recording to confirm that the selected microphone is audible.

Firefox site controls determine whether a site may access the microphone, but they do not guarantee audio quality. Background noise, input level and the operating system default device can affect the recorded result. Sample rate and other capture details are set by the site or browser, not by the basic permission controls.

Common problems and next steps

If a site does not ask for permission, check the microphone entry in Firefox site settings. A saved Block prevents the prompt. Open the site settings from the padlock icon, change microphone access to Allow, and reload the page.

If Firefox is allowed but the microphone is silent, verify that the operating-system permissions allow Firefox to use the microphone. On Windows, look for microphone access and app permissions in system privacy settings. On macOS, check microphone access for Firefox in system privacy settings. Also confirm that the microphone is enabled and not muted in the operating-system input settings.

For wrong-device or low-level audio, select a different input device in the site or browser prompt, and raise the input level in the operating system sound controls. Close other applications that may be using the microphone if Firefox cannot access it. If the problem continues, remove the site from saved Firefox permissions, reload the page, and respond to the new permission prompt.
