How to Find a Missing Screen Recording Button on iPhone
Practical steps to restore a missing iPhone screen recording button, add it to Control Center, start a recording, and check the saved video.
Before you start
Screen recording on iPhone is built into iOS and saves the finished clip to the Photos app. The recording control lives in Control Center, but it may be absent if it was removed from the active controls or if an older iOS version handles screen recording differently. Check that the iPhone is unlocked and running an iOS version that includes Control Center customization before changing any settings.
Step-by-step instructions
Follow these steps to put the screen recording control back into Control Center.
- Open Settings and tap Control Center.
- Below the included controls, look for Screen Recording. If it appears there, tap the green plus button next to it.
- If Screen Recording is already listed under Included Controls, it is available but may not fit on the default Control Center screen.
- Open Control Center. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the upper-right corner. On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge.
- Look for the circular record button. If needed, touch and drag controls in Control Center settings to change their order or remove an item that is taking space.
- When the button appears, open Control Center and tap it. The recording starts after a short countdown.
- To stop, tap the red status area or the screen recording button again. The video is saved to Photos.
Check the output
Open the Photos app and look for the newest video. The clip captures the screen and, if enabled, microphone audio. A screen recording may be missing from Photos if playback was interrupted or if storage was too low to save the file, so also check available storage after a short recording fails to appear.
Common problems and next steps
If screen recording is not showing up in Control Center, search the full settings list again. On some iOS versions the option is labeled Screen Recording and must be added manually before the button can appear. If it is visible but grayed out, Screen Time or another restriction may block recording, in which case the relevant setting should be checked before retrying.
If the screen recording button is missing from a particular app, the app may not allow its interface to be recorded or may pause the output for protected content. Test with the Home screen or another non-protected area before changing more system settings.
Keep file handling local: recordings appear in Photos and can be shared only after the clip is saved. Verify that the final video exists before deleting any temporary content or repeating the recording.
