MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

FaceTime Call Paused

A paused FaceTime call stops live webcam capture until you resume. See how that affects speech, which conditions interrupt the microphone, and what to check next.

What a paused FaceTime call means

A paused FaceTime call has stopped sending live picture, and a full pause also stops live speech until you resume. A webcam microphone cannot deliver your voice to the other person while that pause is in effect, even if the webcam still appears in system device lists. The material limit is the pause type: FaceTime can show a video pause, a mute, or a full call pause, and those controls are separate. Confirm on the call bar whether the session is paused, the microphone is muted, or both, because only a live, unmuted call can capture speech from the webcam.

How the pause affects webcam speech capture

Many webcams combine a camera and a microphone in one USB device. FaceTime on a Mac can use that camera for video and that microphone for voice, or it can use the webcam picture with a different audio input such as the Mac’s built-in microphone. A pause is a call-state change. It interrupts the live media path. It leaves the chosen camera and input device as they were, unless the webcam itself dropped off the system. After you resume, voice quality depends on FaceTime still holding an active capture session and on the system still pointing at the microphone you intend to use.

Conditions that commonly interrupt the call

  • The FaceTime window was left, the Mac slept, or the display locked, so the live session stopped.
  • The USB webcam lost power or was unplugged, which drops both the picture and the webcam microphone.
  • Continuity Camera, which uses an iPhone as the Mac camera, disconnected and FaceTime lost the capture devices it was using.
  • Another app opened the same camera or microphone, so FaceTime could not keep the session.
  • Camera or microphone permission for FaceTime was switched off in system Privacy settings.
  • You or the other participant used a pause or camera-off control in the call.
  • The selected camera or audio input disappeared from macOS, leaving FaceTime with nothing to capture.

Restore the call, then restore speech

  • Bring FaceTime to the foreground and use Resume if that control is shown.
  • Check the microphone control on the call. Mute stops speech while the call stays active; a pause stops the live session until you resume.
  • If you use a USB webcam, confirm it is connected and that both the camera and its microphone still appear in system settings.
  • In FaceTime, select the webcam as the camera so the picture matches the device you mean to speak into.
  • Open system sound input settings and select the webcam microphone if that is the voice source you want. Camera choice in FaceTime and microphone choice in system sound settings are separate steps.
  • Turn on FaceTime access to the camera and the microphone in Privacy settings if either permission is off.
  • Quit other conferencing or recording apps that may hold the same webcam.
  • If you use Continuity Camera, keep the iPhone unlocked and nearby, signed in with the same Apple ID, then reselect that camera in FaceTime.
  • Ask the other participant whether their side is paused. Their pause changes what you see and hear; it does not change which microphone your Mac is using.

Confirm the webcam is the live audio input

Once the call is running, watch the input meter in system sound settings while you speak. Movement on the webcam input means that microphone is capturing speech. If that meter moves and the other person still cannot hear you, FaceTime is likely using a different input, or the call is still muted or paused. If the webcam meter stays still, the microphone is not capturing: check any hardware mute switch on the webcam, the USB connection, and that the correct input device is selected. Matching the camera and the microphone to the same webcam keeps picture and voice on one device; mixing the webcam picture with the Mac’s built-in microphone is valid when you want that split, and it should be an explicit choice after the call resumes.

What remains unconfirmed

This guide has no Apple support excerpts, no OS version notes, and no measured figures for loudness, delay, or whether a video pause always stops the microphone. Menu names and control labels vary by macOS and iOS version. If resume, permission, and input selection leave speech missing, check FaceTime Help on the device you are using. Verify the live call state and the selected audio input before servicing or replacing the webcam.
