How to enable the recording option in Google Meet

Can't find the record button in Google Meet? Learn who can record, why the option may be missing, how to start a recording and how to confirm the file was saved.

The recording option in Google Meet is not something an individual user can switch on from their own settings page. It appears only when three conditions are met: the Google account belongs to a plan that includes Meet recording, recording is allowed for that account (on work or school accounts, an administrator controls this), and the user has permission to record in that particular meeting. If any condition is missing, the record button usually doesn't appear at all. That is why it is often missing rather than greyed out.

The short answer

To get a record button in Google Meet, use an eligible account on a computer and join or host the meeting. Then open the meeting tools or activities menu and look for Recording. If it isn't there, either the account's plan doesn't include recording, an administrator has turned it off, or your role in that meeting doesn't allow it. A free personal Google account generally doesn't include recording. Which paid plans include it changes over time, so check your plan's current feature list rather than relying on any list printed here.

Why the record button might be missing

  • Account type: the account's subscription or Workspace edition doesn't include Meet recording.
  • Admin setting: on a work or school account, the organization's administrator has disabled recording for everyone or for your group.
  • Meeting role: when host management is on, recording may be limited to the host and co-hosts. Otherwise it is typically limited to participants from the host's organization.
  • Device: starting a recording is designed for Meet on a computer. The mobile apps may not offer a way to start one.
  • Timing: a newly changed admin setting can take some time to take effect, and you may need to rejoin the meeting before the button appears.

Before you start: what to check

  • Confirm which Google account you are signed in with in the browser. Being signed into a personal account instead of a work account is a common reason the option disappears.
  • Check that your plan includes Meet recording. On a work or school account, ask your administrator if you're unsure.
  • Use Meet in a desktop web browser on a computer.
  • Decide who should start the recording. Ideally that's the meeting organizer, host or a co-host, because the file is saved to the organizer's storage.
  • Tell participants you plan to record. Meet shows them a recording notice, but asking for consent first is good practice and may be legally required where you or they are located.

How to start a recording during a meeting

  • 1. Join the meeting from a computer using the eligible account.
  • 2. Open the meeting tools or activities menu. It is usually an icon near the bottom-right or top-right of the call window. The exact label and position vary between interface versions.
  • 3. Select Recording. If you also see options such as including captions, choose them now.
  • 4. Select Start recording, then confirm in the dialog that appears.
  • 5. Wait for the recording indicator. A recording label or icon should appear in the meeting window, and participants are notified that the meeting is being recorded.
  • 6. To finish, reopen the Recording panel and choose Stop recording, or end the meeting. Recording also stops when everyone leaves.

Success check during the call: the recording indicator is visible to you and other participants. If you clicked Start recording but no indicator appears after a short wait, assume the meeting is not being recorded and check the account and permission points above.

For administrators: allowing recording in an organization

On Google Workspace accounts, recording is controlled in the Google Admin console under the Google Meet service settings, in the Meet video settings section. An administrator can allow recording for the whole organization or only for specific organizational units or groups. If the setting is off, no user under it will see the record button, whatever their role in a meeting. After the change takes effect, the user should leave and rejoin the meeting, or start a new one, before checking again.

How to confirm the recording was saved

  • Look in the meeting organizer's Google Drive for a folder named Meet Recordings. The file is placed there, not necessarily in the Drive of the person who pressed record.
  • Check the email inbox of the organizer and of the person who started the recording. A message with a link to the file is normally sent once processing finishes.
  • If the meeting was created from a Google Calendar event, check the event as well. The recording may be linked there.
  • Allow time for processing. Longer meetings take longer before the file appears.
  • Open the file and play part of it to confirm that video and sound were captured as expected.

A saved file proves the recording ran. It doesn't confirm that your camera image or microphone sound was good quality. A participant who was muted or had their camera off will appear that way in the recording. If you need clear audio and video, test your camera and microphone before the call, separately from checking that recording works.

Limitations and gaps in this guide

No confirmed details were available for this guide on which subscription tiers currently include recording, recording length limits, processing times or storage limits. These details change, so check your plan's feature list or ask your administrator. Menu names and icon positions in Google Meet are also updated from time to time, so the labels you see may differ slightly from the ones described here, although the overall sequence is the same.
