How to Enable Microphone Permissions for Messenger on iPhone
Turn on microphone access for Messenger on iPhone so voice messages and calls work. Settings paths, how to confirm it works, and fixes when the toggle is missing.
Messenger can only record voice messages or send your voice during audio and video calls after iOS grants it microphone access. The permission belongs to iOS, not to your Messenger account, so you set it on each iPhone where you use the app. This guide covers granting access, confirming it works, and fixing the most common problems.
Before you start
- Install Messenger and sign in. iOS lists an app under microphone permissions only after the app has asked for access at least once.
- Know your iOS version. On iOS 16 and later, the privacy menu is called Privacy & Security. On earlier versions, it is called Privacy.
- The permission is a local setting on your iPhone and needs no connection. Calls and voice messages still travel through Messenger's online service, so you need a working internet connection and an active account to use them.
- If the iPhone is managed by an employer, a school or a parent through Screen Time, microphone changes may be blocked. You may need whoever manages the device to change this.
Step-by-step instructions
The fastest way is to accept the system prompt. In Messenger, tap the microphone button in a chat or start an audio call. If iOS shows a message that Messenger would like to access the microphone, tap Allow. If you tapped Don't Allow before, iOS will not show the prompt again, so use one of the methods below.
Enable access from the app's settings page
- 1. Open the Settings app.
- 2. Scroll down to the list of installed apps and tap Messenger. On recent iOS versions, this list may be under Apps near the bottom of Settings.
- 3. Turn on the Microphone switch.
- 4. If you also make video calls, check that the Camera switch is on. Camera access is a separate permission.
- 5. Close Messenger completely by swiping it away in the app switcher, then open it again.
Enable access from the privacy menu
- 1. Open Settings and tap Privacy & Security (or Privacy on iOS 15 and earlier).
- 2. Tap Microphone.
- 3. Find Messenger in the list and turn on its switch.
- 4. Restart Messenger so it picks up the change.
Both methods change the same setting, so you can undo it at any time by turning the switch off again. Messenger will then be unable to use the microphone until you turn it back on.
Check the output
- Start a call or begin recording a voice message. On iOS 14 and later, an orange dot appears at the top of the screen while an app is using the microphone. In Control Center, iOS can also show which app used the microphone recently.
- Send a short voice message to someone you trust, or call them, and ask whether they can hear you clearly.
- Check which input device is active. If AirPods or another Bluetooth headset is connected, iOS may use its microphone instead of the iPhone's built-in one. Disconnect the headset to test the built-in microphone, then reconnect it to test the headset.
- Keep in mind that what the other person hears depends on the network connection, background noise and how the service processes audio. A working permission does not guarantee perfect sound.
Audio from calls and voice messages is handled by Messenger's service, not just stored on your phone. If you need to know how recordings are stored or processed, check Messenger's current privacy policy and settings yourself instead of assuming.
Common problems and next steps
Messenger does not appear in the microphone list
The app has not asked for access yet. Open Messenger, tap the microphone button in a chat or start a call so the request appears, then return to Settings. If it still does not appear, update Messenger from the App Store and try again.
The switch is greyed out or keeps turning off
Screen Time restrictions or a device management profile may be blocking it. In Settings, open Screen Time, then Content & Privacy Restrictions, and check that Microphone is set to allow changes. If a work or school profile controls the device, ask its administrator.
Permission is on but the other person cannot hear you
- Check that you are not muted on the call screen.
- Disconnect Bluetooth accessories in case audio is routed to a headset that is off, out of range or in someone else's ear.
- Test the microphone in another app, such as Voice Memos. If that also fails, the issue is likely with the hardware or iOS, not Messenger.
- Remove any case or screen protector that covers the microphone openings, and gently clear debris from them.
- Restart the iPhone, and install pending updates for both iOS and Messenger.
Resetting all privacy permissions
As a last resort, you can reset all privacy choices from Settings under General, then Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, and Reset Location & Privacy. This affects every app, not just Messenger. Afterwards, each app will ask for access again, so use this only if the steps above do not help.
