How to Enable the Microphone for iPad Screen Recording

Step-by-step instructions for turning on microphone audio in iPad screen recording, checking the result, and fixing common voice capture problems.

Before you start

The microphone setting for screen recording is a separate control from the main screen recording switch. You can keep the mic input off while capturing the display, capture the built-in iPad voice input, or use it with an available external input device that the system offers in Control Center. This is an on-device action: the recording process does not require an account or cloud service to create the clip.

Before recording, close apps that may expose private details in notifications, lock screens, messages, or media. Choose the screen content you want to capture, because the system records audio from the enabled mic input together with the screen output for the whole session.

Step-by-step instructions

  • Open Control Center.
  • Touch and hold the screen recording control, or press it firmly on a device that supports pressure gestures.
  • In the popover, find the microphone button. On recent iPadOS versions, it appears as a waveform icon below the app picker area; older versions may show a microphone icon in the same control.
  • Tap the microphone button so it changes to the active or red state and shows a label such as Microphone On. Tap Start Recording when the mic input is in the intended state.
  • Wait for the visible countdown to end, then switch to the app or screen you plan to record.
  • When you are finished, open Control Center and select the screen recording control again, or tap the red status indicator where available, to stop the capture.

The steps are reversible while setting up: you can turn the mic input off before starting, or cancel the popover without creating a recording. Once recording starts, you cannot add microphone audio as an independent track afterward.

If the microphone control is not shown, update iPadOS through system settings, because versions before screen recording gained mic capture may not expose the toggle in the same place. On a device with a removable case or cover, make sure nothing blocks the microphone openings.

Check the output

Apple screen recordings are saved to the Photos app by default. Open the saved clip and confirm that both the screen image and the expected voice audio are present. The recording format and encoding choices may be optimized automatically by the system and are not exposed to users through routine screen recording controls.

Pay attention to the recording start before judging the mic input. If the beginning is silent while a countdown was visible, check speech that was recorded after the timer finished. Keep the test short and speak at a normal distance to confirm audible level without treating an app-specific or device-specific result as a universal measurement.

Common problems and next steps

If the clip has screen video but no voice, first confirm that the microphone control was active before recording started. Screen recording can be started with the mic off, and the setting does not switch on automatically just because an audio-capable app is open.

If speech is present but weak or noisy, reduce background noise by moving closer to the mic input, choosing a quieter room, or removing fans and other nearby output devices. Check whether the issue appears only with one app, because a video call, music player, or another app that holds exclusive audio access can change the available capture source during recording.

For recordings that include a call or protected playback, remember that some apps can block screen sharing or return only silence for copy-protected content by design. A missing input level meter inside the screen recording control is normal on iPadOS; verify audio from the saved recording rather than expecting live metering in the popover.

Do not assume that video playback or microphone capture has failed simply because the file begins with a short pause. Check output around speech and system sounds, and if the recording continues to exclude voice while the mic control is on, restart the iPad and try a brief test with no other audio apps active.
