How to Enable Camera Permissions on iPhone

Turn on, change or restore camera permissions on iPhone for apps and Safari websites, check that the camera works, and fix common access problems.

Apps and websites on an iPhone can't use the camera until you grant access. If a video call shows a black screen, a scanner won't open, or a webcam test page reports that no camera is available, the cause is usually a missing or denied camera permission. This guide shows how to turn camera access on, how to change it later, and how to confirm it works.

Before you start

Camera permissions are managed on the iPhone itself. Changing them doesn't require an account, an internet connection or any outside service. iOS stores each permission per app, so allowing one app doesn't allow any other.

  • Make sure the app you want to use is installed and has been opened at least once. An app appears in the camera permission list only after it has asked for access.
  • If the camera is for a website, note which browser you use. Safari has its own website settings. Other browsers need camera access as an app, and may also ask for permission on each site.
  • If the iPhone is managed by a school or employer, or uses Screen Time limits set by someone else, some settings may be locked. You may need the passcode or the administrator to change them.
  • Menu names vary between iOS versions. Recent versions use Privacy & Security, older versions use Privacy. On iOS 18 and later, settings for individual apps sit under Settings > Apps.

Step-by-step instructions

Allow camera access when an app asks

The first time an app tries to use the camera, iOS shows a prompt asking whether to allow access. Tap Allow (some apps show OK) to grant it. If you tap Don't Allow, iOS won't show the prompt again for that app, and you'll need to turn access on in Settings.

Turn on camera permissions in Privacy settings

  • 1. Open Settings.
  • 2. Tap Privacy & Security (Privacy on older iOS versions).
  • 3. Tap Camera.
  • 4. Find the app in the list and turn its switch on. Turn the switch off to remove access again.

This screen is the quickest way to review iOS camera permissions for every app at once. You can switch access on or off at any time, so the change is fully reversible.

Change camera permissions from an app's own settings

  • 1. Open Settings.
  • 2. On iOS 18 or later, tap Apps. On earlier versions, scroll down to the list of installed apps.
  • 3. Tap the app's name.
  • 4. Turn on Camera. If there is no Camera option, the app hasn't requested camera access yet.

Allow the camera for websites in Safari

Safari asks before a website can use the camera. To change the default for all sites, open Settings, go to Safari (under Apps on iOS 18 and later), tap Camera, and choose Ask, Deny or Allow. Ask is a sensible default because it lets you decide site by site.

To change the setting for the site you have open, tap the page settings button in Safari's address bar, open Website Settings, and set Camera to Ask or Allow. Then reload the page.

Allow the camera for other browsers

Browsers such as Chrome or Firefox need camera access as an app before any website can use it. Turn the browser on under Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera. Then allow the camera when the website asks, or check the browser's own site settings if you blocked it earlier.

Check the output

Open the app or website again and start the feature that needs the camera, such as a video call preview or a camera test. A live picture should appear. While an app is using the camera, iOS shows a green dot in the status bar. Opening Control Center shows which app is using or recently used the camera.

If the picture appears but looks wrong, check the selected camera. Many apps let you switch between the front and rear cameras, and a black image can mean the chosen lens is covered. Resolution and frame rate are set by each app or website, so they can differ between a video call app and a camera test page. For the built-in Camera app, video resolution and frame rate are set under Settings > Camera > Record Video. Good lighting also makes a big difference, since a dim room produces a darker, noisier image.

Granting permission controls whether an app can use the camera. It doesn't tell you what the app does with the images. Check each app's or website's privacy information to see whether video is processed on the device, uploaded or stored.

Common problems and next steps

The app isn't listed under Camera

An app appears in the list only after it requests access. Open the app, start the feature that uses the camera, and allow access when prompted. If no prompt appears, the app may not need the camera for that feature, or the feature may only be available in another part of the app.

The camera switch is greyed out or the Camera app is missing

Screen Time restrictions can block the camera. Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and check the allowed apps list to make sure Camera is enabled. On a managed device, a configuration profile from your organisation may block the camera, and only the administrator can change that.

Permission is on but the camera still doesn't work

  • Close the app completely and open it again.
  • Make sure no other app is using the camera, especially another video call app.
  • For websites, reload the page and check the site's camera setting in the browser.
  • Restart the iPhone.
  • Check that the lens isn't covered by a case or a protective film.

Reset all privacy permissions

If you've denied access in several places and want apps to ask again, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. This resets location and privacy permissions for every app, not just the camera, so apps will ask for each permission again the next time they need it.

If the built-in Camera app also shows a black screen after all of these steps, the problem is probably not a permission issue. In that case, update iOS and contact Apple Support or an authorised service provider about the camera hardware.
