MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

How to Connect an Elgato Stream Deck to Discord

Set up Stream Deck buttons for Discord mute, deafen and channel actions: install the plugin, authorize the connection, test each button, and fix common problems.

The short answer

You connect a Stream Deck to Discord through the Stream Deck desktop software, not through a Discord setting. In that software you add the Discord plugin published by Elgato and drag a Discord action, such as Mute, onto a key. The Discord desktop app then asks you to authorize the connection, and you approve it. After that, the key controls Discord and usually shows Discord's current state, such as whether you are muted.

Two details decide which route applies to you. First, the plugin talks to the Discord desktop app running on the same computer. It does not control Discord in a web browser. Second, if the plugin has no action for what you want, such as a camera toggle, you can still use a Stream Deck Hotkey action. That action presses a keyboard shortcut you have assigned in Discord. This guide covers both routes.

Evidence note: no product documentation, version numbers or test results were supplied for this article. Menu names and the plugin's action list are described in general terms and can differ between software versions. Check them against what your own Stream Deck software shows.

What you need before you start

  • A Stream Deck device connected to the computer, or the Stream Deck Mobile app paired with it
  • The Stream Deck software installed and running on Windows or macOS
  • The Discord desktop app installed, running and signed in to your account on the same computer
  • Permission to install software or plugins on that computer, if it is a managed work or school machine

Method 1: Use the Discord plugin

Use this method for voice controls such as mute and deafen. The plugin can also show live status on the keys.

  • 1. Open the Stream Deck software and look in the actions list on the right for a Discord category. If you see it, skip to step 3.
  • 2. If there is no Discord category, open the plugin store from inside the Stream Deck software. Search for Discord and install the plugin published by Elgato. Success check: a Discord category appears in the actions list.
  • 3. Drag a Discord action, such as Mute, onto an empty key.
  • 4. Switch to the Discord desktop app. An authorization prompt should appear asking whether Stream Deck may connect to your Discord account. Approve it. Success check: the prompt closes without an error, and the key in the Stream Deck software stops showing a warning or alert symbol.
  • 5. Add any other Discord actions you want on other keys, such as Deafen, Push to Talk or a voice-channel shortcut. The available actions depend on the plugin version you have installed.
  • 6. Press each key once while watching Discord. Success check: Discord's own indicator changes. For example, the microphone icon in the user panel shows as muted, and the Stream Deck key icon changes to match.

Method 2: Use Discord keybinds with a Hotkey action

Use this method when the plugin has no action for what you want, or when you prefer not to authorize a plugin. A keybind is a keyboard shortcut you assign to a Discord function in Discord's settings. The Stream Deck key simply presses that shortcut for you.

  • 1. In the Discord desktop app, open User Settings and then Keybinds.
  • 2. Add a keybind, choose the function you want (for example, toggle mute or toggle video), and record a key combination. Pick one that no other app uses.
  • 3. In the Stream Deck software, open the System category and drag the Hotkey action onto a key.
  • 4. Click into the Hotkey field and press the same key combination you set in Discord.
  • 5. With Discord in the background, press the Stream Deck key. Success check: Discord's indicator for that function changes.

There is one limitation. A Hotkey key only sends a keystroke, so its icon cannot show whether you are currently muted or whether your camera is on. You have to check Discord itself for the current state.

What a successful test proves, and what it doesn't

When a key changes Discord's mute or deafen indicator, you have confirmed one thing: the Stream Deck can control Discord. You have not confirmed that your microphone works. That is a separate question with three parts. Discord has to detect the correct microphone. The microphone has to pick up sound. And the sound has to be clear enough for other people to understand.

Discord's Voice & Video settings include an input device selector, an input sensitivity meter and a mic test. Use them to confirm that Discord has selected the right microphone and that the meter moves when you speak. Then join a call with someone, or use a recording, to check that your voice sounds clear. No recommended input-level targets were supplied for this guide. Rely on Discord's meter and on real listener feedback rather than a specific number.

Camera keys work the same way. If a key turns your video on in Discord, Discord has access to the camera. That does not show that the picture is correctly framed, well lit or stable during a call. Check the camera preview in Discord's Voice & Video settings to confirm the picture. Video quality during a call can also depend on your connection.

If it doesn't work

Symptom | Likely cause | What to try
No authorization prompt appears in Discord | Discord was closed or still starting when you added the action, or you are using Discord in a browser | Make sure the Discord desktop app is fully open, then remove the action and add it again. If that fails, restart both apps.
You declined the authorization prompt by mistake | Discord refused the connection | Remove the Discord action, add it back, and approve the new prompt.
Key shows a warning symbol | The plugin lost its connection to Discord | Restart Discord first, then the Stream Deck software, and press the key again.
Plugin keys work only sometimes (Windows) | One app is running as administrator and the other is not | Run both apps at the same permission level, normally both without administrator rights.
Hotkey key does nothing (macOS) | macOS has not given Stream Deck or Discord permission to send or read keystrokes | In System Settings, open Privacy & Security and check the Accessibility and Input Monitoring lists. Grant permission to the relevant app, then restart it.
Hotkey key triggers the wrong action | Another app uses the same key combination | Choose a less common combination in Discord, then update the Hotkey action to match.
Mute works but people still can't hear you when unmuted | A microphone or input problem, not a Stream Deck problem | Check the input device and test meter in Discord's Voice & Video settings.

Next steps

After the keys respond correctly, do one short practice call before an important session. In that call, toggle mute and video from the Stream Deck and ask the other person to confirm what they hear and see. That one check confirms the whole chain: the control, the device and the result on the other end.
