DPA 4006 Omnidirectional Microphone: Buying Guide
Considering the DPA 4006 omnidirectional microphone? Check your use case, the key specifications, connection and power needs, and build a practical shortlist.
The DPA 4006 is a small-diaphragm omnidirectional condenser microphone used for studio, location and acoustic recording. Before buying one, check that it fits what you record, what you connect it to and the room you work in. This guide covers those checks without assuming a particular setup.
Start with the intended use
An omnidirectional microphone picks up sound roughly equally from all directions. That suits acoustic instruments, ensembles, room ambience, or a speaker in a quiet, controlled space where you want a natural balance. It also means the room is part of the recording. Reflections, ventilation, keyboard clicks and other background noise reach the capsule as readily as the voice does.
For video calls, streaming or voice-over in an untreated room, decide whether you need that openness. A directional microphone rejects more sound from the sides and rear. If you still prefer an omni, plan to place it closer to the source and to reduce noise in the room itself.
- Where will you record: studio, home office, location or stage?
- What is the source: voice, solo instrument, ensemble or ambience?
- What will the microphone connect to: an audio interface, mixer or field recorder?
- Is the result a live call, a stream or an edited recording?
- How much room sound is acceptable in that result?
Features that matter
Pattern and distance: pressure omnidirectional designs such as the 4006 generally show little proximity effect. Their tone changes less with distance from the source than many directional microphones do. Treat this as a design characteristic, not a promise of a particular sound in your room.
Specifications to read on the manufacturer's data sheet: frequency response, self-noise, maximum sound pressure level, sensitivity and output impedance. Compare candidates only where the measurement conditions are stated. A specification describes the design; it is not a measured verdict on how the microphone will sound in your space.
Grids and accessories: DPA offers interchangeable grids and acoustic accessories for this microphone family that alter the high-frequency response for different placements. Check which grid ships in the box and which are sold separately.
Package contents: a listing may describe a complete microphone, a capsule only, or a capsule paired with a specific preamplifier. Confirm exactly what is included, along with the clip, windscreen and case if you need them.
Check compatibility
The 4006 is an analog condenser microphone with an XLR output, not a USB device. It needs a preamplifier that supplies phantom power, typically from an audio interface, mixer or field recorder. Confirm the exact powering requirement on the current data sheet for the version you buy.
On a computer, the interface appears as the input device, not the microphone itself. Select it in the operating system's sound settings and again in each conferencing, recording or streaming app, because apps can keep their own device choice. If you monitor through the interface, choose its headphone or line output as the output device.
Set the input level with the interface's gain control so that peaks stay clear of clipping. If an app's automatic gain works against your settings, turn it off in that app. Keep the sample rate the same in the interface driver, the operating system and the recording app. A mismatch can cause clicks, dropouts or app errors on some systems.
You also need a balanced XLR cable and a stand or mount that fits the supplied clip. With a portable recorder, check that it provides phantom power and that its battery life with phantom power on covers your session length.
Build a shortlist
Write down your requirements first. Then check each candidate, the 4006 included, against the manufacturer's documentation and the seller's listing.
- Pattern fits the room: choose an omni only if room sound is acceptable or controlled.
- Connection: an XLR input with phantom power is available on your interface, mixer or recorder.
- Computer path: the interface drivers support your operating system and apps.
- Exact package: complete microphone or capsule, plus the grids, clip, windscreen and case included.
- Specifications: self-noise and maximum sound pressure level reviewed against your quietest and loudest sources.
- Seller terms: warranty, return policy and authorized dealer status confirmed.
- Recording practice: consent obtained when recording other people, and storage location confirmed in your recording app's settings.
If any item stays unresolved, ask the seller in writing for the data sheet and full package contents before you buy.
