How to Show a Discord Webcam Overlay While You Play a Game
How to see webcam video from a Discord call on top of your game, how to check it worked, and what to do if you want your own camera in a game stream.
The short answer
Discord has a built-in in-game overlay in its desktop app on Windows. It can place your voice call on top of a running game. To use it, turn the overlay on in Discord's settings, make sure the game has it enabled, join a voice call with video, then open the overlay inside the game and pin the call window so it stays visible.
The phrase "Discord webcam overlay" can mean two different things, and the right steps depend on which one you mean:
- Seeing call video while you play: you want the webcams of people in your Discord call to appear over your game on your own screen. Discord's in-game overlay is the tool for this, and most of this guide covers it.
- Showing your own face on top of gameplay for others: you want viewers to see your camera placed inside the game picture, like a streamer layout. Discord's overlay does not do this. Your overlay is visible only to you and is not added to what you share. The last section covers the usual workaround.
Before you start
- Use the Discord desktop app. The in-game overlay is not part of the browser version or the mobile apps. If you can't find an overlay section in your app's settings, your platform probably doesn't offer the feature.
- Make sure Discord can use your camera. Your operating system's camera privacy settings must allow the Discord app. No other program should be holding the camera exclusively.
- Know that some games block overlays. Some anti-cheat systems and some display modes stop overlays from appearing. This guide includes a check for that case.
Step 1: Confirm your camera works in Discord
Open User Settings, go to Voice & Video, and choose your webcam under the camera setting. Use the video test or preview there.
How to know it worked: you see a live, moving image of yourself in the preview.
What this check proves and what it doesn't: it confirms Discord can access your camera and capture video on your computer. It does not show what other people in a call receive, or how clear the picture looks to them. That depends on the connection and the call itself, so you check it separately in Step 5.
Step 2: Turn on the in-game overlay
In User Settings, find the Game Overlay section. Depending on your Discord version, it may sit under Activity Settings. Turn on the in-game overlay. While you are there, note the key combination that unlocks the overlay. By default it is Shift plus the backtick (`) key, and you can change it.
How to know it worked: the overlay toggle stays on after you close and reopen settings.
Step 3: Make sure the game has the overlay enabled
Discord applies the overlay to games it recognizes. Open the game, then look at Discord's game activity or registered games list in settings. If the game isn't listed, use the option to add it manually. Check that the overlay is switched on for that specific game.
How to know it worked: when you launch the game, a small Discord notice appears. It usually reminds you of the unlock key.
Step 4: Join a call with video and pin it in the overlay
- Join a voice channel or call. Turn on your camera, or ask the others to turn on theirs.
- Switch to the game and press the overlay unlock key.
- In the unlocked overlay, find the voice call panel and use the pin option to keep it on screen.
- Move and resize the pinned panel so it doesn't cover important parts of the game.
- Press the unlock key again to go back to playing. The pinned panel should stay visible.
How to know it worked: after you lock the overlay and return to the game, the call panel still shows on top of the game.
Evidence gap: no confirmed details were available on exactly what the pinned panel shows in current Discord versions. Some versions may show live webcam tiles, and others may show only avatars and speaking indicators. Check this directly. If you see only avatars while someone's camera is on, your version or settings may not offer in-game video. In that case, keeping the Discord window open on a second monitor is the dependable alternative.
Step 5: Check the result from both sides
- On your screen: confirm the panel appears over the game and stays there through normal play.
- From someone else: ask a person in the call whether they see your video and whether it looks clear and smooth. Only another participant can confirm what they receive and how good it looks. Your own preview can't tell you that.
No reliable figures were available for target frame rates or bitrates in this setup, so this guide doesn't give numeric quality thresholds. Judge the result by whether the other person can see you clearly.
If the overlay doesn't appear
- No launch notice at all: re-check Steps 2 and 3. The global overlay toggle and the per-game toggle both need to be on.
- Overlay missing in full screen: switch the game to borderless windowed mode, if it offers one. Exclusive full-screen modes can stop overlays from drawing.
- Overlay works in other games but not this one: the game or its anti-cheat may block overlays. Settings can't fix that. Use a second monitor or a separate window instead.
- Overlay appears but the camera is black: go back to Step 1. A blank preview there points to camera access, the wrong camera choice, or another program using the camera.
If you want your own webcam inside a game stream
When you share a game with Discord's screen sharing, your camera is sent as a separate video tile, not merged into the game picture. Viewers see the two side by side, and your in-game overlay is not captured. To put your face inside the game picture, you need a separate broadcasting or recording program, such as OBS Studio. In that program you build a scene with the game capture and a webcam source placed on top. Then you share that program's preview window in Discord, or output it as a virtual camera and select it as your camera in Discord.
How to know it worked: a call participant confirms they see your camera placed inside the game image, not as a separate tile.
A note on backgrounds: Discord's camera background effects only change your camera video. Your physical surroundings stay the same, and any edited photo you post elsewhere is separate. If you combine your webcam with gameplay in a broadcasting program, apply background effects in only one place, either Discord or that program. Stacking effects from both can cause conflicts.
