MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

How to change your Discord webcam background

Change your Discord webcam background with a blur, a preset or your own image, check the result in the camera preview, and use a green screen through a virtual camera if you need one.

Discord can replace or blur what appears behind you on camera. This is a virtual call effect: it changes the video other people see, and it does not alter your room or edit any saved photo. You choose the effect in Discord's video settings or during a call, and the camera preview shows you the result before others see it. If you want a true green-screen (chroma key) setup, you will most likely need a separate tool feeding Discord, which is covered below.

The short answer

Open User Settings, go to Voice & Video, and turn on your camera preview. Below the preview, pick a video background: none, a blur, one of Discord's preset images, or your own uploaded image where your account allows it. You can also change it during a call from the options next to the camera button. These are the usual menu names. Discord changes its interface periodically, so the labels on your version may differ slightly.

Two points can change the answer for you. Discord has offered background options in stages, and some people first saw them labeled as a beta or experiment, so the feature may not be present on every app version or platform. Uploading a custom image has been tied to a Discord Nitro subscription, while blur and presets have generally been available without it. This guide could not confirm current plan terms, so check what your own settings screen shows.

Before you start

  • Update the Discord app so you have the current video options.
  • Make sure Discord has permission to use your camera. On Windows this is in the camera privacy settings. On macOS it is under Privacy & Security, Camera. In a browser, it is the site permission prompt or the permissions icon in the address bar.
  • Close other apps that might be holding the camera, such as other video-call tools or camera utilities.
  • Light your face from the front if you can. Background effects separate you from your surroundings more cleanly when you are clearly lit.

Change the background in settings

  • 1. Open User Settings with the gear icon near your username.
  • 2. Select Voice & Video.
  • 3. In the Video Settings area, choose your webcam from the Camera dropdown.
  • 4. Click Test Video or the preview button to start the camera preview.
  • 5. Under Video Background, select None, Blur, a preset image, or the option to add your own image if it is offered.
  • 6. Watch the preview. The new background should appear behind you within a moment.

Success check: the preview shows your live image with the chosen effect behind you, and the effect follows you as you move. If the preview stays black or shows an error, Discord is not getting video from the camera. Fix camera access first, because no background will appear until that works.

Change the background during a call

  • 1. Join the voice channel or call and turn on your camera.
  • 2. Open the small arrow or menu next to the camera button.
  • 3. Choose the video background option and select a new effect.
  • 4. Check your own video tile to confirm the change.

What the preview proves, and what it doesn't

A working preview confirms three things: Discord has camera access, your webcam is producing video, and the background effect is running on your device. It does not show what other people actually receive. Their view depends on your connection, their connection and how Discord adjusts video quality during the call. It also tells you nothing about your microphone. If you need to confirm that others see the background cleanly, ask someone in a test call to describe what they see.

No specific resolution, lighting level or bandwidth thresholds for Discord's background effects were available for this guide. Treat the preview and a live test call as your checks, not any numeric target.

If the option is missing or looks wrong

  • No Video Background section: update Discord and look again on the desktop app. The option may not be offered on every platform or version.
  • Can't upload your own image: check whether your plan includes custom backgrounds, and use a preset or blur in the meantime.
  • Edges flicker or parts of you disappear: improve front lighting, sit a little farther from busy surroundings, and avoid clothing that closely matches the background.
  • Preview is black: check the camera permission settings and close other apps using the camera, then reselect the camera in Discord.

Using a green screen with Discord

Discord's built-in effects find your outline in software. They do not treat a green backdrop specially. For a green screen, which removes a single solid color from the image (chroma keying), the usual approach is to do the keying in another program and send the result to Discord as a virtual camera. One common free option is OBS Studio:

  • 1. Hang a green backdrop behind you and light it evenly, so it shows as one consistent shade without strong shadows.
  • 2. In OBS Studio, add your webcam as a Video Capture Device source.
  • 3. Add a Chroma Key filter to that source and adjust it until the green disappears cleanly.
  • 4. Place your chosen background image or video on a layer beneath the webcam source.
  • 5. Click Start Virtual Camera in OBS.
  • 6. In Discord, go to Voice & Video and select the OBS virtual camera from the Camera dropdown.
  • 7. Set Discord's own video background to None, so it doesn't apply a second effect on top.

Success check: Discord's preview shows the composited scene from OBS, with you in front of your replacement background and no green fringe. OBS has to stay open and the virtual camera has to stay running for this to work in calls.
