How to Invite Someone to a Discord Video Call

How to invite someone to a Discord video call from a direct message or a server voice channel, how invite links work, and how to fix camera and access problems.

Discord has no standalone meeting link like some conferencing apps. You either start a call directly with a person or group in a direct message, or you share a server invite so someone can join a voice channel and turn on their camera there. This guide covers both routes.

Before you start

Discord calls run through Discord's online service, not locally on your computer. Everyone needs a Discord account, an internet connection, and the desktop app, mobile app or a supported browser. Your video passes through Discord's infrastructure. If that matters for your situation, check Discord's own privacy documentation rather than assuming how call data is handled.

  • For a direct call: the other person must be able to receive messages from you. This usually means you are friends or share a server, depending on their privacy settings.
  • For a server call: you need permission to create invites on that server, and the voice channel must allow members to connect and use video.
  • Your operating system and, in a browser, the site itself must have camera permission for Discord.
  • The correct selected camera should be set in Discord's Voice & Video settings, especially if you have more than one capture source, such as a built-in webcam and a USB camera.

Step-by-step instructions

Option 1: Call someone directly

  • 1. Open a direct message with the person, or create a group DM with everyone you want on the call.
  • 2. Select the video call (camera) icon at the top of the conversation. On mobile, the call icons are at the top of the DM screen.
  • 3. The other participants see an incoming call and can join with or without their camera.
  • 4. To add someone after the call has started, add them to the group DM or use the add-people option in the call, where your app version offers it.

This route doesn't use a link at all. It's the simplest choice when the person is already one of your Discord contacts.

Option 2: Share a server voice channel invite

  • 1. In your server, hover over or long-press the voice channel you want to use.
  • 2. Choose the invite option for that channel to generate an invite link.
  • 3. Before copying it, open the invite link settings if you want to control how long the link stays valid and how many times it can be used.
  • 4. Send the link to the person through any channel you trust.
  • 5. Join the voice channel yourself and turn on your camera with the Video button in the call controls.
  • 6. When the person opens the link, they join the server. They then connect to the voice channel and enable their camera if they want to be seen.

A server invite grants membership to the server, not just to one call. Anyone who receives the link can usually see the channels their role allows. Prefer a short expiry and limited uses for one-off calls. If your server offers temporary membership on invites, consider it so guests are removed when they disconnect. These settings can be changed or the invite revoked later, which keeps the process reversible.

Check the output

  • Use the camera preview in Discord's Voice & Video settings to confirm the right camera is selected and the image is not black or frozen before the call.
  • After joining, confirm your own video tile shows a live image and ask the other person whether they can see and hear you.
  • Check that the invited person appears in the voice channel member list or in the call, not just in the server.
  • If the image looks dark or grainy, improve the lighting in front of you before changing anything else. A webcam's real output depends heavily on light.

Discord adjusts video resolution, frame rate and bitrate according to network conditions and account or server settings. What a participant sees can therefore differ from your local preview. Discord calls are not recorded by Discord itself. If you need a recording, you need a separate tool, and its recording format and encoding settings are configured there, not in Discord. Get consent from participants before recording.

Common problems and next steps

The invite link is invalid or expired

The invite may have reached its expiry time or maximum number of uses, or it was revoked. Create a new invite from the voice channel and check its settings before sending.

The person joined the server but is not in the call

A Discord server video call link brings people into the server. It does not always connect them to voice automatically. Tell them which voice channel to select, and make sure their role can view and connect to it.

The Video button is missing or disabled

In a server, a moderator may have turned off the video permission for that channel or role. Ask a server admin to review the channel permissions. In a DM, update the app and confirm the call actually started.

The camera shows black or is not detected

  • Close other apps that may be using the camera, since many webcams allow only one app at a time.
  • Check camera permission in your operating system's privacy settings and, in a browser, in the site permissions.
  • Select the correct device in Discord's camera dropdown, then reopen the preview.
  • Unplug and reconnect an external camera, then restart Discord.

You cannot start a direct call

The other person's privacy settings may block messages or calls from you. Send a friend request first, or use a shared server voice channel instead.
