How to Disable Webcam Autofocus

Practical steps to disable webcam autofocus in Windows, macOS, browser tools, and camera apps, plus how to check the result and fix common issues.

Before you start

Autofocus is controlled either by the camera driver and its companion app, or by the application that is using the selected camera. Disabling it is usually a local settings change, not something that requires an online service. Check which camera is selected in the app you plan to use, and close other programs that may be holding the camera open. If the camera has a manufacturer utility, install or open it before changing settings.

Step-by-step instructions

1) Identify the selected camera and its software. In your video app or browser, open the device or camera settings and note the camera name. Then open the matching camera utility from the manufacturer if one is installed.

2) Turn off autofocus in the camera utility. Look for a Focus section, Camera Control tab, or Advanced settings area. If an autofocus toggle is available, switch it off. Some utilities label this as AF, Continuous AF, Face AF, or Auto Focus.

3) Check for application-level focus controls. Some meeting and recording apps expose focus controls in their video settings. Open the video or camera settings panel and look for a focus mode, manual focus slider, or autofocus checkbox.

4) Adjust manual focus if available. When autofocus is disabled, some controls allow you to drag a focus slider or set a fixed focus distance. Make the adjustment while looking at the preview.

5) Restart the camera preview. Close and reopen the camera preview or switch away from the selected camera and back, so the app applies the new setting.

Check the output

Open the camera preview and move an object toward the lens. If the image no longer refocuses by itself, autofocus is disabled. If the image stays sharp only at a fixed distance, manual focus is active. The final recording or call may have resolution and frame rate limits controlled separately, so a sharp preview does not guarantee the same sharpness after compression.

Common problems and next steps

If you cannot disable webcam autofocus, start with the camera permission in the application. The app needs permission to use the camera before its settings can take effect. On Windows, also close other camera applications, then reopen the camera in the intended program. On macOS, check the app's camera permission in System Settings and make sure the selected camera matches the one you configured.

If autofocus remains active, the camera may not expose an off switch. In that case, improve the scene so autofocus hunts less: add steady lighting, avoid moving close to the lens, and keep the subject at a consistent distance. Changing focus mode may also be limited by the app, so try a different application that offers manual controls.
