MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Fix a Dell Laptop Webcam That Is Not Working

Step-by-step checks and fixes when your Dell laptop webcam shows a black screen, is not detected, or is blocked in an app.

Start with the likely cause

Most Dell laptop webcam failures are not hardware faults. The usual causes are a disabled camera, a privacy shutter or key that is still active, an app using the wrong input, or permission settings blocking capture. Work through the checks below in order, retesting the camera after each one.

Check the physical shutter and keyboard shortcut

Many Dell laptops have a built-in privacy shutter that slides across the lens. If your screen shows a black or very dark image, open the shutter first. Some models also use a keyboard shortcut, often F9 or Fn+F9, to toggle the camera on and off. Press it once, then test again in your app.

Confirm which device is selected in the app

The app you are using may be trying to capture from an external webcam, a virtual camera, or another video input instead of the built-in Dell camera. Open the app’s video settings and select the entry that names the integrated camera, then restart the video preview or call.

Close other programs that may hold the camera

A webcam can normally be used by only one program at a time. If another meeting app, recording tool, or browser tab is still using the camera, your current app may show a black screen or an error. Close other video applications or end them in Task Manager, then reopen the intended app.

Check Windows privacy settings

Windows can block camera access globally or per app. Open Settings, go to Privacy & security, then Camera. Confirm that Camera access is on for the device. Below that, enable access for the specific desktop app or Microsoft Store app you are using. If you do not find the camera at all here, move to the driver check.

Inspect the camera driver

If the camera is not listed in Device Manager, look under Imaging devices or Cameras. A yellow warning icon means the driver has a problem. Right-click the camera and choose Uninstall device, then restart the laptop so Windows can reinstall it. Do not download drivers from unofficial sites; use Windows Update or Dell support software if an updated driver is required.

Check the camera with the built-in Windows Camera app

The Windows Camera app is useful because it bypasses browser plugins and third-party settings. Open the Camera app and look for an image. If it works there but not in your browser or meeting app, the problem is isolated to that app’s permissions or input selection. If it fails here too, continue with a system-level check.

Reset or update the BIOS only if the camera is gone

Some Dell systems allow the webcam to be disabled in BIOS or UEFI settings. If the camera does not appear in Device Manager, restart the laptop and enter BIOS setup, then look for a camera or integrated webcam option. Confirm the option is enabled. Only change BIOS settings you understand; an incorrect change can affect startup or other hardware.

When to suspect hardware failure

If the camera still does not appear after these steps, or if the image remains black with the shutter open and all permissions enabled, the camera hardware may be faulty. At that point, the appropriate next step is to contact Dell support with your exact model and the checks you have already completed.
