How to Fix a Dell Laptop Webcam That Shows a Black Screen

Dell integrated webcam not working or showing a black screen? Check the shutter, Windows camera permission, browser settings, selected camera and Device Manager.

When the integrated webcam on a Dell laptop shows only a black preview, the cause is usually something blocking the image, a privacy control switching the camera off, or another app or device taking its place. The checks below run from the quickest and most reversible to the more involved, and they apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Identify the symptom and environment

Start by noting exactly what you see. A black frame where the app still lists the camera is a different problem from a "no camera found" message, an error code or a frozen image. Write down these details before changing anything:

  • Your Windows version: Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • The app or browser where the black screen appears.
  • Whether it happens in every app or only in one.
  • Whether it started after a Windows update, a driver change, new security software or connecting a dock or external webcam.
  • Whether the camera indicator light turns on, if your model has one.

Isolate where the fault occurs

Open the built-in Windows Camera app first. It has no browser or meeting-app settings, so its result tells you which layer to look at:

  • Black in the Camera app as well: look at the privacy shutter, a camera key on the keyboard, Windows camera permission or the device state in Device Manager.
  • Camera app shows an image but a website stays black: the browser or site camera permission is the likely cause.
  • Camera app and browser work but one meeting app is black: check the selected camera in that app.
  • An error saying the camera is in use: another app is holding it.
  • No camera listed anywhere: check Device Manager and, on some models, the firmware setup.

Try reversible fixes in order

Check the shutter, keyboard key and lens

Many Dell laptops have a small sliding privacy shutter above the display, and a closed shutter produces exactly this black image. Slide it open and look again. Some models also have a function key marked with a camera icon that turns the camera off; check your keyboard for that symbol and confirm its behaviour in your model's user guide instead of assuming a particular key. Remove any tape, sticker or case edge covering the lens. In a very dark room the preview can look almost black, so turn on some lighting to rule that out.

Allow camera access in Windows

In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. In Windows 10, open Settings > Privacy > Camera. Make sure camera access is on, that apps are allowed to use the camera, and that the specific app you need is switched on. Desktop programs, including most browsers and meeting clients, are controlled by a separate desktop-apps option on the same page; exact labels vary between Windows versions. After changing a camera permission, close and reopen the app and check whether a live preview appears.

Close other apps using the camera

The camera may be held by another program, so a second app gets a black frame or an "in use" error. Close meeting apps, browser tabs that used the camera, and background effects or virtual camera tools, including ones running from the system tray. If you cannot find what is holding it, a normal restart releases the camera.

Check browser camera permission

If the problem appears only on websites, click the icon to the left of the address bar to see the site's camera permission, set it to allow, and reload the page. Also look in the browser's own site settings for a camera list where the site might be blocked, and confirm the browser is set to use the integrated webcam rather than another device. The browser itself must also be allowed in the Windows camera settings above.

Choose the right camera in the app

Video call apps keep their own selected camera. If you have used an external webcam, a dock or monitor with a built-in camera, or virtual camera software, the app may still point to a device that sends nothing. Open the app's video settings, choose the Dell built-in camera, often listed as Integrated Webcam or a similar name, and watch the preview in that settings screen.

Check the device in Device Manager

Right-click Start and open Device Manager. The integrated webcam usually appears under Cameras or Imaging devices. If it shows a down-arrow icon, it is disabled; right-click it and enable it. If it shows a warning symbol, open Properties and note the device status text. Uninstalling the device and restarting lets Windows reinstall it; leave the option to delete driver software unchecked unless you already have a replacement driver. Get drivers only through Windows Update or Dell's official support page for your model, not third-party driver sites. If the camera is missing, choose View > Show hidden devices. Some Dell models can disable the camera in the BIOS setup, so check your model's documentation for that option. If you use security software with webcam protection, look for a blocked-apps list and allow the specific app rather than turning protection off.

Confirm the result

Go back to the app or website where you first saw the black screen, not only the Camera app, and confirm the preview is live and moves when you do. If your model has an indicator light, check that it turns on. Look at the resolution and frame rate options in the app to make sure they are at normal values for a call. Restart the laptop once and test again to confirm the fix holds. If the image now appears but is grainy or dark, that is a separate quality issue, usually related to lighting, not the original fault.

If the problem remains

Keep a short record so support does not need to repeat your work:

  • Windows version and build number.
  • Each app and browser you tested, and the result in each.
  • The Device Manager status text or error code for the webcam.
  • Confirmation that the shutter, camera key and permissions were checked.
  • What changed on the laptop shortly before the problem began.

Contact Dell support or an authorised service provider if the camera stays black in every app with permissions on and the shutter open, if it does not appear in Device Manager after a restart and the hidden-devices check, or if it keeps an error status after Windows Update has reinstalled it. A black screen alone does not prove the camera has failed; the cause can still be software or an internal connection, which a technician needs to assess. Check your warranty status before opening the laptop yourself.
