How to Enable Camera Permissions for DoorDash Dasher
Turn on camera access for the Dasher app on iPhone or Android, confirm the camera preview works, and fix black screens or permissions that keep resetting.
The Dasher app asks for camera access for tasks such as taking a photo at drop-off or completing an identity check. If you denied access earlier, those screens may show an error or a blank preview. This guide shows how to turn the camera permission back on in iPhone and Android settings and how to confirm it works.
Before you start
Your phone's operating system controls camera permission, not your DoorDash account, so you change it on the device itself. The photos you take are a separate matter. They are submitted through the app to DoorDash's service, and DoorDash's policies govern how long they are kept and who can see them. Check the current privacy terms in the app rather than assuming how your images are handled.
- Install the Dasher app from your phone's official app store and update it to the latest version.
- Note whether your phone runs iOS or Android. On Android, also note the manufacturer, because settings labels differ.
- Check whether an employer, school or parental-control profile manages the phone. These profiles can lock permission settings.
- Open the phone's built-in camera app and make sure both the front and rear cameras work.
Step-by-step instructions
iPhone
- 1. Open Settings.
- 2. Scroll down to the list of installed apps and tap Dasher. The exact name shown may differ slightly.
- 3. Turn on the Camera toggle.
- 4. Go back to the Dasher app. If it still shows a camera error, close the app fully and reopen it.
Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera also lists every app that has requested access. Older iOS versions call this section Privacy. If Dasher is missing from that list, the app has not asked for the camera yet. Open a feature in the app that needs the camera so iOS shows its prompt, then choose Allow. If the toggle is greyed out, check Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps, where the camera can be blocked for all apps.
Android
- 1. Open Settings and tap Apps. On some phones this is called Apps & notifications or Applications.
- 2. Find Dasher. If it isn't shown, tap See all apps.
- 3. Tap Permissions, then Camera.
- 4. Choose Allow only while using the app.
You can also long-press the Dasher icon and tap App info to jump straight to its settings. Menu labels vary by manufacturer and Android version. On Android 12 and later, a system-wide camera access switch in privacy settings and Quick Settings can block the camera for every app, even one that has permission, so make sure it is on. If you pick Ask every time, Android will prompt you again in later sessions. Allow only while using the app avoids repeated prompts.
The change is reversible. You can revoke or narrow the permission later from the same screen. Access while the app is in use is normally enough, because photo capture happens on screen inside the app.
Check the output
First, reopen the permission screen in Settings and confirm the camera is allowed for Dasher. Many camera features in the app only appear during an active delivery or a verification request, so you may not be able to test right away. When the app next asks for a photo, a live preview should open instead of an error or a new permission prompt.
- Confirm the right camera is active. The rear camera is usually used for package photos and the front camera for face checks.
- Make sure the lighting is good. Dim scenes produce dark, noisy or blurry images.
- Wipe the lens before capturing.
- Check that the subject is sharp and fully in frame before you submit.
- Wait for the app to confirm the photo was accepted before moving on.
The permission only controls whether the app can reach the camera. It does not change resolution or frame rate, which the app decides. You also can't confirm from your phone how a submitted photo is processed or stored.
Common problems and next steps
Dasher is missing from the camera settings
The app appears in the camera list only after it has requested access at least once. Open the app, start the feature that needs the camera, and accept the system prompt. If no prompt appears, update the app and try again.
The preview is black or frozen
Another app may be holding the camera. Video call apps, scanner apps and screen recorders are common causes. Close them, then fully close and reopen Dasher. If that fails, restart the phone. If the built-in camera app also shows a black screen, the problem is the device or operating system, not the Dasher permission.
The permission keeps turning off
Android can remove permissions from apps you haven't used for a while. In Dasher's App info screen, turn off the option labelled Pause app activity if unused or Remove permissions if app isn't used. The wording varies by phone. Also check that a security, cleaner or battery-saving app is not resetting permissions.
A photo or identity check is rejected
If the camera opens but the app rejects the result, improve the lighting and follow the on-screen framing instructions. If rejections continue while the permission is on and the preview works, contact Dasher support from within the app. Reinstalling the app is a last resort. It resets the permission, so you'll need to sign in again and allow the camera when prompted.
