MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

How to crop a Discord webcam and change its aspect ratio

Discord has no built-in webcam crop or aspect ratio setting. This guide shows how to crop and reshape your camera with a virtual camera, select it in Discord, and check what other people see.

The short answer

Discord's camera settings let you choose a camera and preview it. They do not offer a general crop tool or an aspect ratio control for your webcam feed. To crop the image or change its shape, you edit the video before it reaches Discord, and then you select the edited feed as your camera.

The most common way to do this is with a virtual camera. A virtual camera is software that takes your real webcam, lets you crop or reshape the image, and then presents the result to other apps as if it were a separate camera. OBS Studio is a widely used free option on Windows, macOS and Linux, and the steps below use it as the example. Some webcam makers also include zoom or field-of-view controls in their own software, which may be enough if you only need a tighter frame.

Two terms can mean different things here. Cropping removes part of the image, such as a messy edge of the room. Changing the aspect ratio changes the frame's width-to-height shape, for example from widescreen 16:9 to the squarer 4:3 or to a 1:1 square. You can do either one or both in the same setup.

What you need before you start

  • The Discord desktop app or Discord in a desktop browser. A virtual camera is a desktop-computer method. No mobile crop workflow was confirmed for this guide.
  • OBS Studio, or another virtual camera tool you already trust, installed on the same computer.
  • Camera permission for the apps that will use the camera. On Windows, check Settings, then Privacy & security, then Camera. On macOS, check System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Camera. If you use Discord in a browser, the browser also needs camera permission for Discord.
  • Your webcam closed in other apps. On many systems only one app can use a physical camera at a time, so OBS may show a blank image if Discord or a meeting app is already using the webcam.

Step 1: Set the frame shape in OBS

In OBS, the canvas sets the shape of the video that Discord will receive. Open Settings, go to Video, and set the Base (Canvas) Resolution and the Output (Scaled) Resolution to the shape you want. Any width and height in the right proportion will work. For example, 1280 by 720 is 16:9, 960 by 720 is 4:3, and 720 by 720 is a 1:1 square. Click Apply and OK.

Success check: the black preview area in the main OBS window changes to the new shape.

Step 2: Add your webcam and crop it

  • In the Sources panel, click the plus button, choose Video Capture Device, name it, and select your webcam from the Device list.
  • To crop by dragging, select the webcam source in the preview, hold Alt (Option on a Mac), and drag an edge handle inward. The trimmed area disappears.
  • For exact values, right-click the source, choose Filters, add a Crop/Pad filter, and enter how many pixels to remove from each side.
  • To fill the new frame, right-click the source and use Transform. Fit to screen keeps the original proportions and may leave bars. Stretch to screen fills the frame but distorts faces if the shapes don't match. For a natural look, crop the source to roughly the same shape as the canvas, then resize it to fill the frame.

Success check: the OBS preview shows only the part of the picture you want, in the frame shape you chose, with no unwanted black bars or stretching.

Step 3: Start the virtual camera

In the Controls panel, click Start Virtual Camera. Keep OBS open while you are on camera in Discord. If you close OBS or stop the virtual camera, Discord loses the cropped feed.

Success check: the button changes to Stop Virtual Camera.

Step 4: Select the cropped feed in Discord

  • In Discord, open User Settings with the gear icon next to your name.
  • Go to Voice & Video and find the Camera dropdown.
  • Choose OBS Virtual Camera rather than your physical webcam.
  • Use the video preview or test option on that page to view the feed.
  • If Discord was open before you started the virtual camera and it doesn't appear in the list, fully quit and reopen Discord.

Success check: Discord's preview shows the same cropped, reshaped image you see in OBS.

Step 5: Check what other people see

A working preview confirms that Discord can access the virtual camera and capture its picture. It does not confirm how the video appears on someone else's screen or how good it looks during a real call. Viewers' layouts, window sizes and connections can change what they see. Discord may also fit video into tiles that crop or letterbox it on the viewer's side. This guide could not confirm how Discord displays non-widescreen shapes such as 4:3 or square in each layout.

To check this, join a voice channel with a friend or a second account, turn your camera on, and ask them to view your video both in the grid and full screen. Ask whether anything important is cut off, whether you look stretched, and whether the image is sharp and smooth. If a square or 4:3 feed is being trimmed, leave some extra space around your face in the OBS crop, or switch back to 16:9.

If something doesn't work

  • OBS shows a black or frozen webcam: close other apps that might be using the camera, check your operating system's camera permission, then remove and re-add the Video Capture Device source.
  • Discord shows a black screen with OBS Virtual Camera selected: make sure the virtual camera is running in OBS and the OBS preview isn't empty.
  • The OBS option is missing from Discord's camera list: start the virtual camera first, then restart Discord. In a browser, also check the browser's camera permission for Discord.
  • Your image looks mirrored in the preview: some apps flip the self-view only for you. Ask a viewer which way text appears before you change anything. To flip the image in OBS, right-click the source and use Transform, then Flip Horizontal.
  • The picture looks soft after cropping: cropping enlarges a smaller part of the camera's image, so heavy crops lose detail. Crop less, or move the camera closer.

Limits to keep in mind

This method changes the video that Discord receives. It does not add a crop or aspect ratio feature to Discord itself, so the cropped feed only appears while OBS and its virtual camera are running. Cropping the frame is separate from Discord's background effects. Hiding part of a room with a crop is different from blurring or replacing the background, and both are different from editing a photo's background afterward. No confirmed evidence was available on recommended resolutions, frame rates or quality settings for Discord video, so judge results by your own test call rather than by a fixed target.
