Convert APE to FLAC

How to convert APE files to FLAC with free desktop tools. Steps for preserving lossless audio quality, checking output, and fixing common conversion problems.

Before you start

Choose a free desktop audio converter that supports Monkey's Audio APE input and FLAC output. A local converter does not upload files, but verify the application's permissions and privacy terms before opening personal recordings.

Step-by-step instructions

  • Install a free converter that lists APE and FLAC support.
  • Open the converter and add your APE file.
  • Select FLAC as the output format.
  • Choose the sample rate and bit depth. Keep the source values to avoid unnecessary conversion.
  • Set the output folder to a location you can find later.
  • Start the conversion and wait for it to finish.

If your converter shows an embedded cue sheet, do not split the file unless you know how the original album was mastered.

Important settings

  • Compression level changes only FLAC encoding time and file size, not audio quality.
  • Bit depth should normally remain 16-bit for CD rips or 24-bit for high-resolution recordings.
  • Keep the channel layout unchanged unless you have a specific playback requirement.

Check the output

Open the converted file in a media player that reads FLAC metadata. Confirm that the duration matches the APE source and that playback continues through quiet passages without pops or truncation.

Lossless limitations

APE and FLAC are both lossless formats, so conversion preserves the decoded audio values. It cannot repair dropouts, clipping or faults already present in the APE file.

Common problems and next steps

  • If FLAC playback is distorted, verify the sample rate and bit depth instead of increasing volume.
  • If the converter omits tags, use a tag editor after conversion.
  • If an APE file fails to open, the file may be incomplete or protected; compare its size with the expected source.

Store the original APE file separately until you have verified the FLAC output. Once the copy is confirmed, you can remove the duplicate to free space without changing audio quality.
