How to Control PipeWire Volume and Devices with a GUI

Practical guide to controlling PipeWire volume, input and output devices with a graphical mixer such as pavucontrol on Linux.

Before you start

PipeWire itself does not provide one fixed GUI. The most widely used graphical control panel for PipeWire audio is pavucontrol, a volume and device mixer that presents PipeWire devices through the PulseAudio-compatible interface. In many desktop installations, pavucontrol is called Volume Control or Audio Volume Control and runs locally on the same machine where PipeWire is managing the sound devices. Other graphical interfaces may also appear, but pavucontrol is the common choice for changing per-application volume, selecting input and output devices, and muting streams.

Confirm that the package is installed before relying on the procedure. On Debian-based systems, install it with sudo apt install pavucontrol. On Fedora, use sudo dnf install pavucontrol. On Arch, the package is available as pavucontrol and can be installed with sudo pacman -S pavucontrol. Package names and menu labels can vary between desktop environments, so if the command is missing, search the desktop application list for Audio Volume Control or Volume Control.

Step-by-step instructions

Start the mixer from the application launcher or by running pavucontrol in a terminal. The window is organized into tabs such as Playback, Recording, Output Devices, Input Devices and Configuration. Keep the window open while playing audio or using a microphone so the streams appear.

Select an output device

  • Open the Output Devices tab.
  • Find the device you want to use, such as headphones, speakers or an HDMI output.
  • Click the green check button next to that device to set it as the default fallback output.
  • Drag the volume slider to adjust the output level, or click the speaker icon to mute it.

If the expected device is missing, open the Configuration tab and check that the sound card profile is active. Profiles such as Analog Stereo Output, Digital Output or HDMI may need to be selected before the corresponding output appears.

Select an input device

  • Open the Input Devices tab.
  • Find the microphone or other input device.
  • Click the green check button next to it to make it the default fallback input.
  • Adjust the input level with the slider while speaking into the microphone.

The input level meter can help you set a signal that is strong enough without constantly hitting the top of the scale. Keep the level out of the red or maximum range to reduce harsh clipping. If the microphone is too quiet, check the application volume after setting the device level.

Control a running application

  • Start or continue the application that is playing or recording audio.
  • Open the Playback tab for sound output or the Recording tab for microphone use.
  • Find the application stream in the list.
  • Use the device dropdown above the stream to route that application to a specific output or input device.
  • Drag the stream volume slider independently of the main device volume.

Changing a dropdown for one application affects that application only. The default fallback device affects new streams that do not request a different device.

Check the output

  • Play audio and confirm the volume changes immediately in the Playback tab.
  • Speak into the microphone and confirm movement in the Input Devices level meter.
  • Switch applications between devices and listen for the change.
  • Close the mixer and reopen it to confirm the default device selection persists.

Quality and format behavior depend on the active sound card profile, the application and the sink that PipeWire selects. The GUI exposes device and stream controls, but detailed sample rate and buffer settings are normally configured through PipeWire configuration files rather than the volume control panel. Use the visible device names and level meters to verify routing, not to measure exact latency or resolution.

Common problems and next steps

No devices appear

If the mixer opens but shows no usable devices, PipeWire or the session manager may not be running. Restart the user services with systemctl --user restart pipewire pipewire-pulse wireplumber, then reopen the mixer. WirePlumber is the common session manager that makes devices available to PipeWire, so a missing or stopped WirePlumber service can leave the GUI empty even when PipeWire is active.

An input device records but sounds too noisy

Lower the input level slightly in the Input Devices tab and move the microphone closer to the sound source. Check whether the application is using the intended microphone rather than a built-in array or webcam microphone. Background noise is not always shown as a separate control, so routing the correct input device is the first correction.

Application volume resets or uses the wrong device

Some applications remember their own device choice and volume. Reopen the Playback or Recording tab while the application is active, then change its stream dropdown. If the setting does not stick, restart the application after selecting the desired fallback device so it starts with the updated default.

Volume changes but audio still clips or distorts

Reduce both the application stream volume and the device volume. A device can be muted independently from an application stream, so check the speaker icon on each relevant row. If distortion continues, test another profile in the Configuration tab, because an incorrect profile can route audio through an unintended or overdriven path.

If the basic mixer does not provide enough control, check whether the desktop environment includes a more detailed audio settings panel. PipeWire also exposes routing through other compatible tools, but pavucontrol remains the practical starting point for per-device and per-application volume control.
