Connecting an iPad to an HDMI Display over USB-C

Step-by-step instructions for connecting a USB-C iPad or iPad Pro to an HDMI display, checking video output, and fixing common connection problems.

Before you start

You need a USB-C iPad or iPad Pro, an HDMI display or TV, an HDMI cable, and a USB-C to HDMI adapter that supports your iPad. The connection runs locally between the iPad, adapter, and display; it does not require a network service or an account. Check your iPad model because older iPads with a Lightning port use a different adapter. If the adapter has a power input, connecting a USB-C charger can help prevent battery drain during longer video sessions.

Step-by-step instructions

Connect the HDMI cable to the display and the adapter, then plug the adapter into the USB-C port on the iPad. Turn on the display and select the HDMI input that matches the port used by the cable. Unlock the iPad and wait a few seconds for it to detect the display.

If nothing appears, open an app that supports external video output, such as a video player or presentation app. Many apps mirror the screen automatically, while some switch to a second-screen mode when the adapter is detected. Check the app's playback or presentation controls for an external display option if the image does not appear.

For a powered USB-C to HDMI adapter, use the adapter's pass-through USB-C port for charging when necessary. Some adapters work without external power, but sustained playback or screen mirroring can use battery faster. Follow the adapter maker's instructions for which port to use for power and which to use for the iPad.

Check the output

Confirm that the iPad screen appears on the display at an acceptable size and orientation. Video output may be limited by the adapter and display's supported resolution or refresh rate. Letterboxing or black bars can appear when the iPad's aspect ratio does not match the display. Rotate the iPad or check the display's zoom and aspect settings to see whether the image fits acceptably.

For apps with a dedicated external display mode, verify that the correct screen is showing on the HDMI display and that controls remain usable on the iPad when applicable. Some video players show only the video on the external screen and keep playback controls on the iPad.

Common problems and next steps

If the display says no signal, reseat the adapter and HDMI cable, then choose the correct HDMI input on the display. Try the adapter with another USB-C device or the HDMI cable with another source to identify the failed part. Not every USB-C to HDMI adapter works with every iPad or iPad Pro, so verify compatibility in the adapter's documentation.

If the screen is blank after the iPad is unlocked, try reversing the order: connect the adapter to the iPad first, then attach the HDMI cable or turn on the display to trigger detection. If audio continues through the iPad speakers instead of the HDMI display, check the app's audio output settings and the display's volume and mute state. Update iPadOS when available, because display compatibility can change with system updates.
