How to Configure the Pro Audio Profile in pavucontrol
Step-by-step instructions for enabling the Pro Audio profile in pavucontrol, adjusting input and output levels, and checking the result on Linux.
Before you start
The Pro Audio profile is a local PulseAudio or PipeWire configuration applied through pavucontrol on the computer where the audio device is connected. It does not require a separate audio service beyond the sound server already running on the system. Open pavucontrol from the application menu or terminal after the microphone, headset, or other audio device is plugged in and recognized. If the device does not appear, close pavucontrol, reconnect the device, and reopen the utility before changing profiles.
Step-by-step instructions
Start pavucontrol and select the Configuration tab. The tab lists detected sound cards and devices with their currently active profile. Find the device you want to use for recording or playback.
Open the profile menu for that device. Depending on the installed sound server and driver version, the available entries may include Pro Audio, Analog Stereo Duplex, Digital Stereo Output, Input, Off, or similar options. Choose Pro Audio when you need direct access to multiple channels on a multichannel interface.
After applying Pro Audio, switch to the Input Devices tab. Select the intended input device from the list if more than one is displayed. Use the level meter as a practical guide while speaking or while the source is active, and move the input level slider so normal signal peaks remain clear of the top of the meter.
Open the Output Devices tab and choose the playback device you want to monitor. Set the output level to a comfortable listening position. Then return to the Playback and Recording tabs and assign each application to the appropriate output or input device when pavucontrol shows multiple routes.
The procedure is reversible. If Pro Audio exposes too many channels for your workflow, reopen the Configuration tab and switch back to the previous profile or to Analog Stereo Duplex.
Check the output
Play a short reference sound such as speech or a known music file and confirm that the correct output device shows movement in its level meter. While the source is active, watch the input level meter in the Input Devices tab and listen through the selected output device for unexpected distortion or background noise. Version and driver differences can affect which channels are exposed, so compare the available entries in the Configuration tab rather than assuming every Pro Audio device shows the same layout.
Common problems and next steps
If Pro Audio does not appear, the installed driver or sound server version may not expose that profile for the connected device. Check whether the device appears under a different name on the Configuration tab and reopen pavucontrol after reconnecting it. If the profile is available but no signal arrives, confirm that the application is routed to the active input device and that the input level is not muted or set to zero.
Persistent background noise may come from an unused high-gain input or an application source rather than the profile itself. Mute unused inputs and reduce the input level before adding other processing. If recording quality is the main concern, sample rate and channel routing are set by the sound server and device profile; changing them is typically handled through the sound server configuration rather than pavucontrol alone.
For a video call or recording, make the test in the actual application after configuring the profile. Keep the Pro Audio profile selected only while you need its multichannel access, and return to a simpler duplex profile when a basic microphone and output are sufficient.
