How to Turn On Closed Captions on DIRECTV

Turn on closed captions on a DIRECTV satellite receiver or in DIRECTV Stream, check that they display correctly, and fix missing, doubled or delayed captions.

Closed captions on DIRECTV show spoken dialogue and important sounds as on-screen text. Where you turn them on depends on how you watch: a satellite receiver, a DIRECTV Stream device, or the app on a phone, tablet or smart TV. This guide covers each setup, explains how to confirm the captions work, and lists fixes for common problems.

Before you start

Identify which DIRECTV setup you are using, because each has its own caption control:

  • Satellite service with a Genie HD DVR, a Genie Mini client or an older HD receiver connected to your TV
  • DIRECTV Stream on a DIRECTV-supplied streaming device
  • The DIRECTV app on a phone, tablet, computer, streaming stick or smart TV

Captions are produced by the broadcaster or content provider and delivered with the program. Your receiver, device or app only decides whether to display them and how they look. You do not need to download anything, but a program without caption data will not show captions even when the setting is on.

Also check how the receiver connects to your TV. With an HDMI connection, the receiver usually draws the captions itself, so the DIRECTV setting is the one that matters. The TV's own caption setting generally works only for signals it decodes directly, such as its built-in tuner.

Menu names and layouts vary by receiver model, software version and app version. If a label below does not match your screen exactly, look for the closest equivalent.

Step-by-step instructions

Satellite receivers (Genie and other HD receivers)

  • Turn on the TV and receiver, then tune to a channel or start a recording.
  • For a quick toggle, press INFO on the DIRECTV remote while the program is playing. On many receivers, the info banner that opens includes a caption control. Select it and switch captions on.
  • If there is no caption option in the banner, press MENU and open Settings. Look for a section named Accessibility or Closed Captioning.
  • Turn closed captioning on.
  • If style options are shown, such as text size, font, color or background, adjust them for readability. Not every receiver offers the same options.
  • Press EXIT or BACK to return to the program and check that text appears.

To turn captions off, use the same banner option or menu setting. If you have a Genie Mini or a second receiver in another room, check the setting on that device separately. Don't assume one change applies to every TV in the house.

DIRECTV Stream devices and the DIRECTV app

  • Start playing a live channel, recording or on-demand title.
  • Open the on-screen player controls with the remote's select or down button, or by tapping the screen on a mobile device.
  • Look for a captions icon, often marked CC or shown as a speech bubble, and select it.
  • Choose to turn captions on and, if offered, choose a caption language.
  • Close the controls and resume playback.

On a streaming device or smart TV, the device's system accessibility settings may also affect caption style or default behavior. If captions in the app look different from what you selected, check the caption section of the device's own settings.

Check the output

Tune to a program that is likely to carry captions, such as a national news broadcast or a prime-time network show. Confirm that text appears, matches the dialogue and is easy to read from where you sit.

Some limitations come from the source, not your settings:

  • Live programs are usually captioned in real time, so text often appears a few seconds after the speech and may contain errors.
  • Pre-recorded programs usually have more accurate, better-timed captions.
  • Some channels, older content, on-demand titles or local inserts may have incomplete captions or none at all.
  • If captions appear on one program but not another, the setting is working and the missing captions are likely a source issue.

Common problems and next steps

Captions do not appear

First switch to a different channel to rule out a program without caption data. If no channel shows captions, reopen the caption setting and confirm it is still on. On the app, make sure you changed the setting in the DIRECTV player itself. If the setting looks correct but nothing displays, restart the receiver or device and test again.

Two sets of captions or overlapping text

This usually means both the TV and the DIRECTV receiver are drawing captions. Keep captions on in the DIRECTV setting and turn them off in the TV's own menu, or the other way around if you prefer the TV's styling and your connection supports it.

Captions won't turn off

Check both places captions can come from: the DIRECTV caption setting and the TV's caption setting. On streaming devices, also check the device's accessibility settings, since a system-wide caption preference can override individual app choices.

Text is too small, hard to read or blocks the picture

Use the caption style options in the receiver menu or device accessibility settings, if available, to change text size, color or background. A solid background behind the text often improves readability on busy scenes.

Captions are delayed or out of sync

A delay on live broadcasts is normal because captions are typed or generated as the program airs. If recorded or on-demand programs are also badly out of sync, restart the receiver or app. If the problem continues across many channels, contact DIRECTV support and say which receiver or device you use and which channels are affected.
