How to Change Google Meet Backgrounds on iPad

Step-by-step instructions for changing or blurring your Google Meet background on iPad, including what to check before and after you apply an effect.

Before you start

You can change the Google Meet background from the iPad app while you are preparing to join a meeting or after you are already in the call. The effect is applied by the Meet app on your device, but your iPad must support the feature and the app needs permission to use the camera. Check that the Google Meet app is installed and updated before you begin.

Make sure the selected camera is available to Meet. On iPad, the app normally uses the front camera for video calls. If camera permission was denied earlier, the background controls may not work because there is no active video input to preview.

Step-by-step instructions

Start by opening the Google Meet app on your iPad and joining a meeting or creating one. Look for the video preview screen before you join. The background options are usually available from an effects or sparkle icon at the bottom of the self-view preview.

Tap the effects icon to open the effects panel. You should see a blurred background option and a set of preset background images. If your account or device supports uploading a custom image from Photos, that option appears in the same panel.

Select a blur level or tap a background image to preview it on your self-view. The preview updates before you join, so you can try several backgrounds without disturbing the meeting.

If you are already in a meeting, tap the screen to show the controls, then open the effects or more options menu. Choose the same background controls and apply the effect. The change usually appears for your own video immediately, while other participants see the updated video once it is sent.

Check the output

Use the self-view tile to verify that the selected background looks correct. Check the edges around your face, hair and shoulders, because an artificial background may show rough borders when lighting is uneven or when the camera struggles to separate you from the scene.

A blurred background changes the amount of visual detail in the frame, but it does not change the camera resolution, frame rate or aspect ratio settings. The image is processed after capture, so the video still follows the resolution and frame rate supplied by the iPad camera and connection.

If you use a preset background, the app may stretch or crop the image to fit the video frame. This depends on the background image dimensions and the aspect ratio of the self-view. A photo with a very different ratio can look cropped even when it appears correct in Photos.

Common problems and next steps

If the background button is missing, the iPad model, app version or account may not have the feature. Update the Google Meet app and restart it, then check the self-view again. The option can also be hidden if the camera permission is off, so confirm that camera access is allowed for Meet.

When the selected camera does not appear in the preview, close other apps that may be using the camera and return to Meet. On iPad, background replacement needs a working front camera; if the camera is still unavailable, the effect cannot be applied.

Poor lighting is the most common reason for a weak result. Place yourself in more even light and avoid a bright window directly behind you. This usually improves the edge detection more than changing the background, resolution or file format of the image.
