MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Change the background color in CapCut

How to change the background color in CapCut: set a solid canvas color behind your video, or remove a person's background and place a color behind them, with version caveats.

The short answer

In CapCut, "background color" can mean two different things, and the method depends on which one you need.

  • Canvas color: the area around your video when the clip does not fill the project's aspect ratio, such as a horizontal webcam recording placed in a vertical project. CapCut's canvas or background setting lets you choose a solid color, a blur, or an image for this area.
  • The background behind a person: replacing the room behind the speaker with a solid color. This normally uses CapCut's background removal, or chroma key if the footage was shot against a green screen, with a color layer placed underneath the cut-out clip.

One limitation applies to everything below. No version-specific documentation was supplied for this guide, and CapCut renames and moves its controls between releases and between the mobile, desktop and web versions. The steps describe the general workflow. If a label does not match what you see, look for the same function under a nearby name.

Change the canvas color

Use this method when you only want to fill empty space around the frame with a solid color.

  • 1. Open your project and set the aspect ratio you want, for example 9:16 for vertical video. Empty bars only appear when the clip's shape differs from the project's.
  • 2. On mobile, look for the Canvas option in the bottom toolbar. You may need to tap an empty part of the timeline first so that the main toolbar shows. On desktop, select the clip and look in the properties panel for a Background or Canvas section.
  • 3. Choose Color and pick a swatch, or use the color picker if your version has one.
  • 4. If the option to apply the color to every clip is offered and you want it, use it. Otherwise the color may apply only to the selected clip.
  • 5. Check the result: play the project from the start and confirm the bars show your chosen color in every section, not only the clip you edited.

Replace the background behind a person with a color

Use this method for talking-head or webcam footage where you want the speaker on a plain colored backdrop.

  • 1. Put a solid color on the main track. CapCut's media library typically includes plain color backgrounds. Alternatively, use any solid-color image you have.
  • 2. Place your speaker clip on an overlay track above the color layer and match their lengths on the timeline.
  • 3. Select the speaker clip and apply background removal, which may be labeled Remove background or Auto removal. For green-screen footage, use Chroma key instead and pick the screen color with the eyedropper.
  • 4. If your version offers edge refinement or chroma key intensity and shadow sliders, adjust them until the outline around hair and shoulders looks clean.
  • 5. Check the result: scrub through the clip, especially during fast movement. Automatic removal can leave halos or briefly cut out hands and edges, and you can only spot this by viewing the footage at full size.

How well automatic removal performs depends on the footage. General practice holds that clear contrast between the subject and the room, even lighting, and an uncluttered background give cleaner edges. No measured results for CapCut's removal quality were available for this guide.

What this means for your audio

Changing the canvas color or replacing the visual background is a video-only edit. It does not change the speech recorded in the clip, so it will not improve or harm voice quality. If you place the speaker clip on an overlay track, confirm that the original audio is still unmuted, and that any audio on the color layer is either absent or muted. Play the finished timeline to check that the voice plays once, clearly, and without a doubled echo.

CapCut edits recorded video. If you want a colored background during a live video call, use the background or virtual camera settings in your conferencing app instead. That setup is outside the scope of this guide.

Gaps in this guide

No confirmed specifications, version numbers or official menu paths were available. Exact button names, whether background removal requires a paid plan, and which features exist in the web version could not be verified here. Check CapCut's in-app help or release notes for your version if a step does not match.
